Video transcript
Good afternoon everyone. Thank you so much for joining us. We hope you are all well and safe and practicing social distancing. This is the nineteenth in our series of Facebook live conversations with members of the community are helping us address a different topics under the covid-, 19 pandemic and lots of different ways, One of the groups experiencing significant impacts of Cobain are students. I know from having four kids myself at home that their lives have been. Offended by missing out on school, their friends and school activities, but of all the different students that are out there. I do think high school seniors in College seniors are really missing the most milestones, especially in high school when you have not just graduation, but you're looking at what colleges you might be wanting to go to and prom, so I thought it would be really useful to learn more about all of those different experiences and so I invited my friend Mikaela Edelman, a high school senior at Newton South High School to join me today to share what the pandemic. Has been like for her what she's missing out on what she's most worried about on and quite honestly what she's learned during this time if anything during this time that we're in the House. so if you have any questions whatsoever during this conversation, please use the chat feature or comment on our Facebook live video and we will get to your questions as soon as we can. and if you're on Zoom, please just raise your hand cuz you're muted and we will un-mute you so that you can ask your question. so with that let's get to. Mikaela I'm so excited that you're here. I know how busy you are not not really talked about but tell us a little bit about yourself your family. tell us about your family. How long you've lived in Newton and some of the things activities you do in your most passionate about hi. so I have so in terms of my family, I have two older sisters. one is 10 years older than me and one is seven years older than me so quite an age gap and the 11 of the most. And another one lives in Minnesota so they're not here right now, but I'm Super excited because next week my sister from Minnesota's driving home, so there will be a bit more activity in the House. I guess which is Super fun because it's a little boring so we've lived in New I lived in my whole life. I mean this is not the House that I was born and I was born in a different House but still new and we live in robbin so. Yeah and then in terms of activities I the main ones are I wrote. so that's Super fun and it's kind of different right now, but that's okay. and then I also I'm involved with an Organization called the Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston Nice, and we're gonna talk a little bit about those already. So what would you say are the one or two things you're most passionate about when someone says what do you care about the most? whether that's an activity or concept? What would your answer be? so I was actually thinking of. A lot last week because in English, we're talking about knowledge for the sake of knowledge and so I was I've always kind of I've always love learning and like since elementary school in kindergarten, we didn't have homework and then I was so excited for first grade because we got homework and I was so excited like bring the learning home and I was I just was so exciting to me and so I've always had a love for learning, but I think that in high school it kind of changes and the motivation isn't really worth learning. It's more towards like doing well in school and. Getting into a good College and stuff like that, and it's not like learning stuff that I'm interested in and it's just like an influx of knowledge just to make us more enlightened and individuals and so I'm like really excited about College and after because that's something that I'm gonna be learning because I wanna learn it and hopefully I can use that in the future to like change the world a little bit and make it better than when I came in which is another passion. It's just like social change and Which is why I'm involved in Greater Boston. I love that, and I think we need more individuals like yourself thinking about that social change is there a specific topic within social change that you gravitate towards a little more whether that's the environment the climate crisis or it's poverty or are there certain topics that you seem to connect with more? I I think I'm still kind of discovering that well in Greater Boston. I've got to experience. About a few of these topics and I took sustainability this past year and so I learned a lot about climate change and environmental issues. and so I'm I'm still kind of working towards what I'm truly passionate about what I can kind of dive into in the future. I love it. Yeah. I think we're all evolving with these topics. Right the more we learn the more we actually honestly understand how they're all inter related as well. which makes that question more difficult. Alright. let's talk about your family for a minute because clearly you're excited that your sister is coming home. It like maybe to save you but tell what is it? Like during 19 in your home with your family over the past month, it's it's been kind of boring. I'd say I mean it's only me so I mean I've been kind of like an only child. I guess for a while now, so it's it's not that different in that sense, but I'd say like we're maybe talking a little bit more just because we have more time and our schedules are kind of more similar. We're all working from home and stuff like that and we're kind of. Interacting more in terms like I'm going to walk with on walks with my mom, which I have never really done before and stuff like that but there is also just like keeping our distance a little bit. so we are not just on top of each other. all the time. Yeah, that makes sense well look if you're really that bored, you can come over my House when you're allowed because I have four little kids that are not boring and actually last night. one of them asked me why are you talking to me so much? it's so okay. so I do appreciate that you like talking to your parents. I think I hope my kids will too you know. So let's let's talk about school itself. What is it been like with school? Now you're senior year the academic parts of school and your workload and your classes tell us a little bit about that. It's been a big change like now instead of having classes every day we have 20 minute classes on Thursdays and that's it and a bit of some office out optional office hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. So there's definitely a lot less of like in class learning and it's definitely a lot more like they give us assignments and. Just by ourselves and I'd say also like the work load has shifted. it seems like it's decreased a lot because it seems like a decrease a lot because you have to assign that are like do every week but there's assignments are generally bigger than like the nightly assignments that we would have had in school. so it's kind of interesting managing my time and how to get those in and like. You take one day off and on Wednesday, then if you did something like you had submitted on Tuesday, then you need to get one day off on Wednesday and oh it's Thursday already and you have something to do on Friday, so it's kind of interesting. it seems like there's more work than they actually is we also shifted to pass fail and so I mean as a senior, you know, senior slump anyways. so I'm truly putting that into effect. So there's definitely less stress but also with the past like I'm still doing assignments as well. if not better. as if we were in school, it wasn't possible fail because there isn't that stress. so I think I'm also putting it into a fact that like not learning just for the sake of learning and actually like finding what I'm gonna get out of it and putting efforts towards what I like wanna prioritize. So why do you think the class went from? I think what you told me some classes you could have three or four times a week are now one time for. Minutes did you get a sense of why that change was happening from school and it was cut down to so little. I'm not really sure because I know other school districts are doing like I was talking to my friend the other day, and she said her school's doing like her. She read me her schedule and it was like nine to 1140 - five and then 1245 to three and that was pretty much every day. So I'm not really sure why public schools is doing only 20 minute Maybe it's just like they don't wanna. Force you to go to classes all the time in case you can't make it or like you have other issues going on and they just don't wanna like worry about that. but I'm I'm not. I'm not too sure. yeah. no. it's I think all of us are trying to figure out the some of these questions. What about from the teaching perspective? How do you think that's been for the teachers now teaching through Zoom or through whatever platform you're using. it's well because we only have 20 minute classes. It's like they can't really teach us that much in that time period. so it's it's usually. Just kind of like oh, do you have any questions and the prior the majority of the learning is kind of on your own. And if you have questions you go to either office hours or you send them a message or you just ask during our class time and so yeah, the priority is definitely just shifted from In-class learning to on on your own and do you see when you when you get on that and for those 20 minutes or any other time with another class is everyone in your class getting on or do you definitely see that there seems to be some gaps of your fellow classmates. The 20 minute times are mandatory and so you have to go so I think for the most part. a lot of people are there or it seems like everyone's there but then the office hours. it's like if I go, It's like three other people like people aren't really taking advantage of that time. Make sense. Alright. So let's let's transition a little into your friends. What is that been like now being in touch with your friends? How's it changed at all other than seeing them in person and what kind of platforms are you using Actually to with them? the most I think faced. A lot a bit of zoom as well but mainly FaceTime just try to keep in touch. keep each other updated on what's going on. It's definitely an exciting with College and stuff like that and just hearing where everybody's going and talking about that. we're also I mean for people close by kind of I'll walk to somebody else's House and we'll like sit on each other's lawns in like six feet apart, obviously and so still keeping the social distance, but being able to talk in person has been helpful or going on walks and stuff like that. And then still like using Snapchat and the usual stuff that hasn't changed at all. probably increase if anything. yeah, no, that makes it makes a lot of sense. Alright so one of the big things for a lot of people, but not everyone is prom and so obviously your prom was cancelled. but can you tell us a little bit about that where you're going to have a prom or you're planning on going? what? It like actually not having a problem and thinking about it if that was something that was important to you. so I was definitely planning on going but Proms are and I had a lot of fun at our semi pro last year, but I the concept of prom and like that kind of thing isn't really my like the top thing that I'd like to go to but it is always fun and I always have a better time than I expected to but we were we were thinking about doing. Prom but then apparently like everyone was like no don't do that. If we're gonna have a problem, we want it in real life and like the virtual pro just like people just didn't wanna do that and so I think now they're kind of working to find something to do whether it's in the summer or later, I don't think it'll be fromm like the same type of promo we would have had it will be some variation, but that's to be determined. We shall see right. so what about your friends? did you have friends that you know for them? They were. It didn't happen because they were they weren't planning on going anyways And opposite to those friends that were really into it. What are they talking about now in regards to it? I think people are I have some friends that are like. Oh, I'm kind of like it's didn't happen. I don't have to worry about it and then I also have friends who are very excited and did really wanna go, but I think as of now, people are kind of more worried about graduation and they brought it and they'd rather have a graduation than necessarily a prom. and so I think we're kind of. Working towards maybe making a graduation type thing or making it as real as possible. but I mean everybody's upset like it's just isn't how we wonder senior year to end or whatever no I'm sure and let's talk about graduation. What what do you know if anything's gonna happen now and what are what are you hoping will happen as well? So I think as of now we're gonna like want to acknowledge everyone in the class. so I think on the day. Or what would have been well before that? we're gonna send in a video or a picture of ourselves and then on the day they'll read everybody's name off. and then at that time, they'll put the video or a picture on the screen so that like it see it's like a it's more like a graduation I guess and then also because we do wanna like walk across the stage of course and get our diploma. I think that they're gonna schedule another day where we can walk across and get her diploma and have more. A graduation experience I guess, and will you have I seen in some school districts are already I drive by for the last day, Senior day or for graduation at there been any of those drives around the school to say goodbye to teachers or anything like that. No not yet. maybe they're planning something, but I haven't heard anything yet. so we'll see okay. So then can I ask that you attend John Krasinski prom or I think it's virtual graduation was last night. So did you attend either of those or did your friends? What what did they? I don't I honestly don't know I only heard about the Pro a few days after it happened, so I guess I'm not very up to date, but I don't know I don't think my friends really did either. so I don't know I don't know either. I didn't hear it after but as a new and native putting on a plane, I love it. I thought it was a great idea. you're my sister. We did messaged him on Instagram. We're like hey, do you wanna make a video for us for our graduation because hey you went to the school and that would be really cool if you didn't get back to us. Alright John if you're listening. This Facebook Zoom you need to get back to Mila and help them okay. Let's go back to your roots. Alright. So let's talk you you brought a crew and you brought up Jewish Team Foundation of Greater Boston. tell us what that's been like let's start with what has that been like now that you're cruise season didn't happen? Yeah. So we're pretty small team. They're only like 12 of us. I wanna say so we're doing practices virtually which basically entails. Going on a Zoom call at the normal times, we would have had practice and then they'll give us the workout. We'll do the warm up and for people who have rowing machines. They'll do the warm up or they'll do the workout on that and they'll all stand on the zoom call at the same time. I don't have a rowing machine, so I'll just go on a run but then they still give me the workout or maybe a slightly modified version. and so I'll still do that and then we come back at the end and we cool down together and stretch and. do you like the normal stuff that we would have done anyway and how is everyone participating in that and how that felt like at least the best you can do from a team approach or do you see people dropping off? No. I think everyone's staying on it. we're all putting in. I think as much effort as we would have anyways and people are like There's a standardized test that we do. It's a 2000 meter test and there's like the people who have. Are still doing that and people have even while on this like in their basement without any help or anything. so I think that's really good to see that people are still putting in the effort as much and soul training for hopefully a summer season and if they're going to College or so just doing the fall season, they're destroying towards that. but and we also have to like send our scores and stuff like that. So it's kind of keeping us to the schedule and this training schedule. So yeah it hasn't. Really changed with all of this it's good that you're staying in shape cuz I'm not doing anything so I'm now even more jealous than I was before you you mentioned at the beginning when you're talking about social change and just now also the Jewish team Foundation of Greater Boston. What is that what did they do? how long have you've been involved in it and tell us a little bit about it for those that may not know anything about it? Yeah. So do Foundation of Greater Boston Center, JT F G B As I will refer to it. It's much shorter. it's a. Team Leadership Philanthropy initiative and so basically how it works is we learn about like a bunch of stuff in the nonprofit world like like grants and Grant proposals and that whole process and just like what makes a good nonprofit and what makes it nonprofit like what aligns with our values with the nonprofit and why we should give to that one and how like which one would you? yeah, we should give her money to and we fund raise ourselves. We allocate money to a few organizations under a specific to a specific subject area that we choose as a group in the as a board in the beginning of the year, and then we learn a lot about the subject area so two years ago when I started, we did mental health with the focus on substance use and then last year was environmental issues and then this year is substance use and we've we just learn a lot. Like how to be leaders in our communities and amongst our peers and and there's a huge focus on consensus building and how to be a good teammates and how to work to work well as a group. I love it and you know, I know a little bit about it. Obviously since I've been on the board there, one of the things that I think is really cool is while we're in Covid- 19. We're talking about how do we help everyone in the community the most vulnerable in our community and lift up everyone's voices you as a group have been doing that now for years, which is understanding the. We don't all start at the same place and sometimes we're not all in the same place going forward and so there's a lot of help that all of you can do to lift up those who are more vulnerable and so I just got to commend you for sticking with the program and being a part of it cuz I think it's tremendous. Yeah. Alright. So let's talk about this summer. You know. I'm sure this is gonna be a wild party all summer for you. what were you planning on actually doing and are you still doing that before going off to College? So my? Plan was to work in a specific neuroscience lab that our family friend runs, but unfortunately with all of this, he said that they like or the hospital that he worked and they won't accept high school or College students for the foreseeable future. just you know to keep it safe and keep it simple. I guess so that was a few months ago, so I'm not doing that anymore. which is very important. I'm excited but hopefully in the future. At some other time, I'll be able to work in it as of now. I don't really know and I'm gonna do it's kind of up in the air I would like to maybe work a little bit, but I'm not really sure what like what what would be a fun job to do since a lot of stuff is closed and I don't I wouldn't really like to be on like technology and like a zoom job that I know some people are doing so I have to kinda figure that out. maybe I'll keep it and I will also travel maybe, but that also doesn't seem like an option so it was to keep it. I like hiking and. I wanna do a lot more of that this summer and just kinda keep it fun. Maybe before going back to school, I go back. Yeah that that makes a lot a lot of sense. What about your friends have most of your friends that had jobs going into summer? Do they still have them or you know what's the situation with a lot of your friends? I think everyone is a lot of people are in the same position like they had a plan and now that's not like it's not possible anymore and I know a lot of other. And a lot of people were planning to go back to camp, but I mean camps are starting to get cancelled as well. So I don't see that as really a plan either. so I don't really know what everyone is gonna end up doing we'll see so you know I'll throw this offer out there. I am definitely looking for interns this summer on our campaign and we have a lot of amazing work so mikaela you are for sure invited if you want to come work on our. It would be amazing and if you know of others that you think would be great, we have so much work. We wanna do because kind of a lot of stuff that you're talking about on how do we get the whole community to be United and stand together. That's what we're about. So think about that. Okay. We'll talk. we'll talk. alright. that sounds good. just don't negotiate too hard. Okay. alright. So let's talk about College though right like you're a senior you're looking at next year. So have you decided where you're thinking of going to College? For next year, Where's that process for you and if you've chosen one did what did you choose and how did you choose it given Covid- 19? Yeah. so I will be going to the University of Michigan next year. Oh, it's fake. go blue. So I'm Super excited The decision wasn't terribly hard because my sister went there. so I went to visit her multiple times and I went to her graduation and everything so I've seen Ann Arbor I've seen the campus and I've kind of got the vibe for this. so I think I was in a pretty lucky position in that sense, just because like I got to see a campus and everything but I know for a lot of other people like they didn't have the chance to go see the campus or the school if they were planning to go once they were already accepted. So yeah. And then I think I was considering maybe taking a gap here at some point, but the plan for that got cancelled cuz I was planning on traveling but in doing some work in in another country, but that got cancelled so I can't do that. And I also think that schools aren't necessarily gonna let kids defer just because like no if schools virtual, I don't think anybody really wants to do virtual school, They're freshman year, which instead of like going on campus and meeting people and exploring the town or city but then if everyone prefers and they won't have a class of 2024. so I don't really think deferring is an option really that much anymore. It's real. A really good point you brought up. I didn't even think about that, which is there you know having a gap here is becoming more and more popular, but why would a school allow a gap year now because it'd be so many more people who said Well, I wanna wait to have the real experience of in person at some of these four year colleges. Yeah. So the decision for you seemed a little easier. You have your sister who would want there. You've been there talk about a little bit about your friends who didn't have that. How are actually deciding which schools to attend next year? Yeah. So I think everyone at this point has made a decision because the decision day was on the first so but it was definitely hard for a lot of people like if they hadn't visited the school and they were deciding between a few schools but They just want to like the student day and just kind of learn more about the school and did a bit of research and now everyone's made a decision and then I hope everyone's happy with and if they're not then I mean transferring their other options that we'll see in the future. What are you guys? most of you and your friends most worried about in regards to College going forward now that you're not are you even sure if College is gonna start on time have the school has Michigan told you anything or your friend's schools told you anything and you know what are you nervous? About and going into the fall, I've seen Michigan seems pretty optimistic about doing like most people on campus and like they said something about the bigger classes being virtual, but then other classes still remaining the same. so I'm I'm they're optimistic and I'm pretty optimistic. I'm excited but I know some other schools I've seen they're not as much and they're already saying that most likely they'll put their everything be virtual in the fall and I think that. Kind of the main worry that it's just not gonna be depression experience and I mean I think a lot of orientations will be virtual, but even that alone just not being able to be on campus and exploring and meeting new people in person and doing the clubs and getting all the sports and all that other like normal College experience that we won't be able to do until I don't know the spring semester or maybe even our sophomore year. Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. So what is this major unexpected change in your life? taught you what have you learned during this time and what are some of the positives that? Come out of out of this time, so I'm generally a pretty like positive person. I like to think I like to see the good and bad situations and just always I guess see the glass half full if you will and just seeing what good come out of that. So I think this has just emphasize that mindset and just validated how important it is to have that because like if you don't then like don't worry and. To a pretty bad state, I think and I think just like kinda keeping every what's gotten me through at least is not thinking about like oh, this is gonna go on for six months a year like that's just such a long time frame that it's pretty hard to conceptualize and of itself, especially when life won't be normal for that long. and so I like to just keep everything like weekly or maybe every two weeks and just see like what what's gonna happen in those next few days or? That next time period, I think that makes a lot of sense and I think we got to stay positive through this, which is let's talk about that for a minute, which is how is this impacted your mental health and yours of your friends? What do you guys doing in yourself in particular kind of for self care? because I think we've seen this time, it is depressing a lot of people and we all have to work on it and figure it out on our own way. So what's been your way to deal with the mental aspects of coming to 19? I think for me. Just trying to like yes life has changed dramatically, but kind of like not really let it change as much as possible, so still seeing friends but from a distance and still like keeping structure there isn't that much structure. so I like to like set a goal for myself every evening for what work. I'm gonna get done that day and just little stuff like that to like keep life as normal as possible when it's so not normal. I think other people are probably doing some other thing or a similar position. I mean I think everyone's struggling. I mean nobody like our seniors are so or just not how we envisioned it and not what we want and we're all so excited like there's this notion of we've worked 13 years up to this point and like what are we getting from that? just like a virtual graduation like it's it's definitely not what we had seen for ourselves but I think just kind of remaining positive and keeping life as normal as possible, and also I've also been thinking about how like in today's time with technology and social media like mental health as a whole has definitely decreased for like younger people teenagers and so, but because there's such an influx of technology usage right now with school, and it's like kind of one of the only ways to connect with friends and stuff like that. I think people are getting. board of social media and using their phone so much and so I think we're getting outside and more and appreciating days like yesterday and just stuff like that we had kind of lost sight of. I think that I think those are all great words of wisdom, which gets me to the next question, which is what lessons have you learned during this time that actually when we do get back to normal that you'd like to take from this time in order to bring it into your daily or weekly or monthly routine. Yeah. I mean, I've always struggled with time management and I mean now isn't really that much better, but I think I'm starting to kind of learn how to manage my time better and how to like as I said before kind of set goals for the evening, so I have something to stick to and also just like appreciating everything that we haven't been able to experience the last few months and probably for the. For the unforeseeable, future or foresee, whatever sorry and yeah, I just like going outside and I think like something like that you just take for granted for so long and then like when I if I go on a walk later like I'll just take every moment cuz like in two days after a masks whenever we go outside and stuff like that, so two kind of questions connected to this, Which is what are you most worried about? I mean we talked about College but outside of kind of College and whether it actually happens in person or not what do most worried about? I think Just life not returning to normal any time soon And just not like okay like I understand that senior year isn't gonna be normal and other activities and stuff like that. And then some are probably won't be normal either and then this and then next fall like it's something to be normal for a while. But just how long is that gonna go on for and also like with the second wave that kind of as well because don't really understand how we can even begin to. Go back to normal without a vaccine or other measures in place just because like people have been self quarantining for so long and as soon as we started to lighten it up, I feel like it's just gonna go back to how it was like, go back to when this was first starting out and before we were quarantines, I think that's kind of what I'm most worried about. Yeah, I could see that being a worry for for a lot of people. We started this whole conversation around you being at home with your parents and your sister coming in to save you. but but our. You know a lot of people haven't been this kind of time with their parents before or loved ones all the time any tips on how you're getting through spending additional time and in close proximity with your parents or and or those who have siblings what they should be thinking about. Yeah, I think just kind of keeping your distance I mean interacting but also kind of living separate lives because I mean that's what we would be doing anyway, so just trying to not. Get in each other like on each other's tails, all the time and kind of just separate and yeah, I don't have I'll see what happens when my sister comes so you'll be a much different situation. But as of now, I think that's kind of what I've experienced. No that make sense. Alright, two kind of digressing questions and one is one personally I've been fighting back and forth with with others, which is you see a lot older people sharing photographs and I did. Myself of my prom and of my graduation to kinda show our support, whereas now I see other people saying that is not helping you're actually making my child or me actually Saturn that you got that and I did it Where do you fall? is that bothering you is that made you Saturn or actually if you like when people are doing that, I think I'm pretty impartial like they like they have the experience. that's fine. They're they're also sad. I think a lot of people will be posting their prom, pictures or graduation. Anyway, at this time, like oh, wait, it's been like a year anniversary or something. I remember this stuff like that, which I think I've seen in the past, so it doesn't bother me that much I mean like when I think about it, I'm like Oh like okay, they had the experience of it. If you don't think about it, you won't get annoyed by it. so yeah it may be true. You can also say like look how old those tuxedos or dresses or massages look like they're just. yeah my my kids just laughed at me like I can't believe you went to a dance looking like that or a graduation. Alright. And really one of the more important questions favorite TV shows or movies that you have seen that you would recommend to people out there. We definitely have a little more time to see them. so what do you think I have I have I think one of my favorite like Disney movies as of recently as Utopia and I think I've watched that at least like four times in this quarantine, it's something like that. I've also watched The British Bake Off a lot just because it's it's a. Of the more relaxing, if not the only relaxing cooking show and it's just been nice to kinda like do a puzzle while I'm watching that and just kind of decompress at night or just whenever if I'm not if I don't have work and stuff like that so two options that I recommend I like those two. I like those too. So look with that Mikaela. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences for being honest about what's going on. We're talking about some tips on helping people get through. I think both for other students that are your age but also for parents and siblings.
