The Boston Woodwind Society is pleased to present the Final Round video of Ivan Javier Valbuena Paez of Colombia, Winner of the 2017 Matthew Ruggiero International Woodwind Competition for Clarinet including the prize of $10,000. The prestigious international panel of five judges included Wenzel Maria Fuchs (Berlin Philharmonic), Varga Gabor (Hungarian Radio Orchestra), Stephen Williamson (Chicago Symphony), Yuan Yuan (China Philharmonic), and Luis Rossi (Soloist and Instrume...nt Maker, Chile).

Ivan was born in Bogotá and began his studies at the age of 8 years in Batuta Foundation and the Wind Band System of Cundinamarca, Colombia. He has performed solo recitals in Colombia and the United States, including the auditorium Olavs Roots of the National University, Oriol Rangel Hall, Luis Angel Arango Concert Hall, Leon de Greiff Auditorium, Cristobal Colon Auditorium, Teresa Cuervo of National Museum, Pickman Hall at Cambridge, MA, Hall of Americas in Washington D.C., and Jessen Auditorium at UT Austin, TX.

He has performed in masterclasses with many renowned professors such as Hector Pinzon, Robert De Gennaro, Berrod Philippe, Timothy Perry, Jonathan Cohler, Michael Webster, Jorge Montilla, Jonathan Gunn, Stephen Williamson, Joaquin Valdepeñas, Ixi Cheng, among others. Ivan is the winner of the 2014 Harold Wright Memorial Clarinet Merit Award competition of the Boston Woodwind Society; the 2013 Concerto Competition and 2014 Honors Competition of the Longy School of Music of Bard College; first prize of the Soloist Competition of the Orchestra Collegium Music at the National University of Colombia; the Young Artists series at the Bibliotheca Luis Angel Arango; first prize of the Young Performers Competition of Bogotá Philharmonic (invited to perform as soloist); the Competition “Clarinetistas Bogotanos” 2010; and second prize of the National Music Performance Competition in Bogotá.

He is currently clarinetist of the YOA Orchestra of the Americas since 2010, and he a member of the music training program YOA Global Leaders, performing and teaching in Panamá, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Chicago. Ivan earned his Bachelor degree at the Conservatory of Music of the National University of Colombia, then studied clarinet performance with Jonathan Cohler - clarinet at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and received his Masters of Music from the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA with Jorge Montilla. He is currently pursuing a DMA at The University of Texas at Austin and is a Clarinet Assistant Instructor there as well.

The Boston Woodwind Society Society is pleased to announce and congratulate Ivan Javier Valbuena Paez of Colombia, Winner of the 2017 Matthew Ruggiero International Woodwind Competition for Clarinet including the prize of $10,000. The vote of the prestigious five-member independent international judging panel followed three elimination rounds for this entirely online video-based competition. BWS received 40 applications from around the world.

The B...WS Board would like to congratulate all entrants for their fine performances. The BWS would further like to recognize and thank the distinguished panel of judges, who all donated their services allowing BWS to maximize the prize for contestants:

As part of Boston Double Reed Day this Sunday, Katarzyna Zdybel-Nam will give a masterclass at 1:00pm in Burnes Hall of the new SLPC building at New England Conservatory. At 5:30pm, she will perform a recital, accompanied by pianist, Yoshiko Kline, in Pierce Hall. The program includes the Saint-Saëns Sonata, performed in this video of the final round of the Matthew Ruggiero Competition. Katarzyna Zdybel-Nam was the 2016 winner!

Winner of the Boston Woodwind Society 1st Matthew Ruggiero International Woodwind Competition for Bassoon Katarzyna Zdybel-Nam performs the Saint-Saëns Bassoon Sonata, Op. 168 with pianist Kasia Kluczewska for the final round of the competition.

As part of the Double Reed Day this Sunday, Margaret Phillips (Boston University and Berklee Faculty) will present:
Contrabassooning 101: A hands-on workshop giving students who have never played contrabassoon an opportunity to learn the basics of getting around the instrument in preparation for an orchestral assignment. in Burnes Hall (New England Conservatory's SLPC Building on St. Botolph Street). Whether you are a contra beginner, have a little contra experience already or just want to get to know more about this often mysterious instrument, this class is for you!! The class begins at 2:30pm.
