Because of long-term habitat loss across the West, many bird species – like this female northern harrier – have seen a decline in population numbers, with the U.S. Forest Service listing the northern harrier as a sensitive species. To help protect burrowing owls – a species of greatest conservation priority by Colorado Parks and Wildlife – Open Space and Mountain Parks has instituted seasonal protections to safeguard their habitats.

OSMP closes certain areas from March 15 to Oct. 31 every year to protect nesting burrowing owls.

Thank you to all of the firefighters, including the 18 Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) staff members, who fought the #gregoryfire. All OSMP trails in the burn area are now open. OSMP Rangers will be patrolling the area over the next several days.

#GregoryFire is now 100% contained. The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

Boulder fire crews monitored the #GregoryFire all night. Containment is still 50 percent. We expect full containment by 6 p.m. tonight.

Flagstaff Road is now open in both directions. #GregoryFire is now 50 percent contained. Firefighters will be on scene all night.

OSMP is closing trails at the Gregory Canyon Trailhead and in the Flagstaff Mountain area, including the Viewpoint Trail, because of the #GregoryFire until further notice. Please avoid these areas to help firefighters fight the fire. Flagstaff Road is also closed in both directions from 6th Avenue to Mile Marker 5.
