Last Monday, on the 24th of February 2020, students from the Bristol... Student Staff Solidarity Group visited striking staff on the picket lines of Bath Spa University's Locksbrook and Newton Park Campus. We felt that this visit was important as it was Bath Spa UCU's first time meeting the strike threshold - it went to 64% from the previous 48%, and thought that student support, across institutions, would help raise morale and solidarity.
We were extremely impressed by the dedication of staff and the UCU at Bath Spa for picketing on every single day of strike action, braving the cold and rain. This was compounded by the fact that Bath Spa University is split across several different campuses. Solidarity helped us hit it off immediately through chanting, singing, and talking about our interests, as well as issues in higher education. For all the talk of league tables and rankings, universities cannot be poised to compete against each other because we are all academic allies, as well as allies in the nationwide fight for fairer working conditions.
In particular, we would like to thank Roger, the branch's liason officer, and Samantha Walton for their impeccable coordination and organisation that made this trip possible. Members of Bath Spa University, alongside colleagues from Bath and Exeter, in turn, joined us on the picket lines and marched down with us to College Green on Wednesday, 26th Feb.
