All week we've been taken on a virtual journey around Macquarie Isla…nd with our Senior Meteorological Observer, Alana 🌊🐧❄️ Today, on the final day of National Science Week we wanted to ask Alana some of the hard-hitting questions about Macca, so we enlisted the help of some primary school students from Sacred Heart College in Tasmania. (They know a thing or two about the island as they've been studying it this year 📚) Spoiler alert: make sure you watch until the end to hear from the island's loudest visitors! Afficher la suite

As we have seen over the past week, Macquarie Island really is a tru…ly special place. Not only does it have beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife, it also has spectacular weather phenomena (and observers, thanks Alana!) — from gorgeous rainbows and fog bows, snow flurries to auroras. Here's some fun facts to leave you with as we wrap up National Science Week: Did you know that during the peak of summer, there are only about four hours of darkness? And that rain and snow are frequent, with only a few days each year with no precipitation? If you visit, make sure you bring your thermals and umbrella☂️! Macquarie Island's oceanic climate really can make it a land of extremes. Learn more about Macquarie Island: http://ow.ly/nBri50B5cGC Afficher la suite

Did you know our Offshore Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) are the m…ost critical tool we have for forecasting tropical cyclones at sea🌀 ? Our Offshore AWS monitor winds, temperature, humidity and pressure, providing reliable, accurate and up-to-the minute information that is vital for cyclone forecasting and analysis, as well as safety at sea. The real-time data assists forecasters in analysing the location and intensity of the cyclone, and the data feeds into our weather models so we can get the best possible prediction of its likely track and strength.
