Limited Originality of Content Guidelines
To get the best distribution on Facebook, we encourage Pages to post videos that are primarily filmed and produced originally by the publisher. However, we also realize that Pages may not always be able to post original content, and audiences want to see a variety of content from different backgrounds and producers.
In these cases, we encourage Pages to add new value to the original production through modification. Below we provide a set of guidelines to help Pages understand the differences between original content, meaningfully enhanced content, and content that may be flagged for limited originality.
Pages that post only content with limited originality will face reduced distribution on our platform and will have their access to monetization tools limited or removed. This type of content is against our Page Terms as well as our Content Monetization Policies.
Our Limited Originality of Content guidelines are separate from our intellectual property policies, which do not allow for posting of content that violates another's intellectual property rights.
Original Content
Pages receive the greatest distribution when their Page primarily consists of videos that are filmed or streamed by the same person or production company that posts it. Our goal is to reward this type of content with the highest distribution, and therefore, monetization. Content is considered original across any of the Pages you own.
Examples of original content include:
- New episodes, clips or trailers of a show by the producers, talent or network.
- Vlog of a creator.
- Content filmed by the publisher.
- News coverage with a news anchor.
These are just examples. Other types of content may still be original if filmed or streamed by the same person or production company that posts it.
Meaningfully Enhanced Content
Pages that source or license footage in their videos can still receive distribution and monetization on Facebook if they meaningfully enhance and add value to their content. Note that Pages must add value within the video itself to the content they post.
Examples of meaningful enhancement include:
- A persona appears throughout and adds new information, such as appearing in a video overlay to add commentary.
- Text or voice narration appears throughout and adds new information, such as a sports Page adding details about a player's performance to a clip.
- Consistent editing is used throughout and adds new information, such as a compilation of clips around a person to tell their life's story or a top 10 list of a product category with pricing or performance details added.
Limited Originality
Content violates our limited originality policy if your Page had no role in creating it and does not meaningfully alter its source.
Pages that do not meaningfully enhance and add value to the content they post will be unable to monetize, and will receive less distribution on Facebook.
There are three major behaviors that can lead to limited originality flags for your Page:
- Limited editorialization: A Page posts videos that the Page did not film or produce, with minor but not meaningful enhancements (voiceover, commentary, graphics or creative editing that do not add value). Examples of minor enhancements include:
- Meme bars
- Logos
- Background music
- Changing video speed
- Adding subtitle transcripts in the same language as the audio language
- Describing what happens in a video with no additional information
- Aggregating: A Page compiles and posts videos from multiple Pages or third-party content creators. Examples include:
- Curating content from multiple sources without without meaningful enhancements
- Compiling videos together without meaningful enhancements
- Duplicative content: A Page posts content that already exists on Facebook that the Page had no meaningful role in creating.
These are just examples. Other types of content may still violate this policy.
Note: This policy can still apply to copyrighted or licensed content.
Next Steps
If your Page has been flagged for posting content with limited originality, we recommend that you consider the following solutions:
- Post content that your Page created: The best thing you can do for your Page is to regularly post content that you produced yourself or with dedicated partners.
- Make meaningful enhancements: You can use content you are approved to use from other sources as long as you increase its value through creative editing, voiceover or commentary. These enhancements must be meaningful -- simply stitching together clips or adding a watermark does not qualify as meaningful enhancement.
- Review and evaluate your content: Check to make sure you are not posting content that your Page had little or no role in creating.
- File an appeal: If you believe that your Page has been flagged incorrectly, you can file an appeal with our team. If the Page was flagged incorrectly but you would like to comply with our guidelines, we recommend posting a significant number of videos that are original or meaningfully enhanced before requesting an appeal.
