Best practices to choose a category for your Page or profile on Facebook
Choose a category for your Page
When you set up your Page, you can select up to three categories that best describe your business, brand or organisation. If you can't add a category, it might be a general category that is included in your specific selection. Choose only the most relevant and specific categories.
For example, if you own a local sweet shop, choose "bakery" or "dessert shop" instead of "local business". This will help people who look for sweet shops to more easily find your business. If you select "sweet shop", your business has already been classified as a restaurant and you won't be able to find that category.
Categories can help your business, brand or organisation grow because they:
- Appear on your Page: Your main category appears below your Page name. Choosing more specific categories can help customers better understand what your business, brand or organisation does.
- Help people find you: Categories make it easier for potential customers or fans to find you.
- Search: You appear in Facebook search when people search for the categories that you selected.
- Recommendations: People who have indicated that they're interested in the services you provide or products you sell will receive recommendations for your Page.
- Location: Your Page appears in search when people look for businesses near them. Make sure that you update your address so potential customers can find you.
- Show related Pages: Categories help organise similar Pages for people to discover.
Note: If your business is in the service, restaurant, retail or e-commerce category, find best practices for your Page.
Choose a category for your profile
Categories for profiles are available only in professional mode. When you turn on professional mode for your profile, you can select a profile category to display what type of creator you are. For now, you can't create a profile category, so select the option that most closely describes you.
Your main category appears on your profile below your name. Setting a category can help more people discover your profile on Facebook and understand more about you. When people search for you on Facebook, your profile category appears in the search results. Profile categories are public, so anyone who views your profile can see it.
