My name is Tony thurman and I'm running for superintendent of public instruction in the great state of California simply because I believe that education can change lives and in my case education save lives before you is to send in of African slaves and immigrants from by mom and Columbia. In jamaica. In Detroit, Michigan by way of Mississippi, my mother immigrated here from be a teacher. My dad was a Vietnam vet. Why never met, who wasn't in my life when I met him as an adult, he said that the physical and mental scars of war are kept him away from our family. My mom race for kids until she couldn't because she was Very sick and she lost her battle to cancer when I was six years old. I ended up being raised by my cousin in a low income household where we use public assistance programs and food stamps and a free lunch program and government cheese. I often joke we ate so much government cheese, but I thought that with the brand name but these programs help my family and allow us to sustain and allowed me to be elected as a school board member and a 20 years, social worker 12 years working in our schools and in our Legislature, expanding the free lunch program, giving a College scholarship to every foster youth in our state and giving money to our schools to Make sure our kids graduate that's. Why I introduce the bill that puts a tax on private prisons so we can give money where it belongs to preschool and after school programs. Let us educate and not incarcerate our kids in the great state of California. We need to close our teacher shortage so that we can close the achievement gap so we can improve special education and to that end I've introduce the bill that gives a scholarship to anyone who wants to become a teacher and a teacher housing bill so our educators can afford to live in the communities where they work and serve Earth we need to also make sure that we send the message to donald trump and Secretary the boss. The public education is not for sale and we will not tolerate the privatization of education in our state. That send the message to the President that our teachers don't need to have guns in our schools. We need politicians who ban guns in our nation and provide mental health services for the children of our state who are impacted by trauma that's why. I'm proud to introduce a bill that will give more school based mental health advocates to support our students and we must make sure our students are ready for the jobs of tomorrow by giving more tech education and vocational education and our Education so we create global thinkers and leaders of tomorrow. This all starts by making sure we provide more funding for our schools for 46 in the nation in per people. Education. Our kids deserve better. Let's make them number one in funding in our nation. I hope that you'll join those who support my campaign, like senator kamala harris superintendent Tom toilets in the California teachers Association, California nurses and firefighters, equality, California in plan parenthood, let's give all of our students a great public education and California.
