Very good scout camp! They have more options than any camp I’ve heard of and staff did a very good job with classes and other activities. Meals were ok, which means good for a scout camp. They need... to resolve their bed and mattress issues and find a way to increase the swim area...and reconsider their desserts...some went uneaten which tells you something. If you have plenty of leaders going, I highly recommend surplus adults considering renting one of their cabins. See More

Attended the third consecutive family camp this weekend. Acting vitae's are great for the kids. Food needs help in terms of quality and variety. The new hall us beautiful. However, there is a horrible... echo in this huge building. I do not suggest using the PA system and karaoke should be kept at a low volume. See More

This my 3rd year (5th session)going here as an a.s.m.

Sure your going to have problems with a program when it's as popular as it is. But when brought up, Its usually addressed in a timely fashion....

The food, well what do you expect when the food is mostly frozen food heated up. Hint hint....give up on the egg rolls. They're horrible. Also don't advertise juice available when it's not for 3 days. Kudos though on the steak bbq. For once the steak wasn't so over cooked that it tastes like cardboard.

The ceremonies were excellent. Silly but fun. Corny but interesting. Its what makes chawanakee a good place to do summer camp.

Pet peeve is a system needs to be put in place to update charts (blue cards)so you can monitor your scouts better. 5 pm Thursday and nothing been updated since Tuesday. Sure makes the last 4 hrs hell on Friday. At least my med records didn't get lost this year.

I will be returning to chawanakee.

Its a pretty good program and facility's. You can't go there expecting a Disneyland fantasy. There's going to be issues. What do you expect when this world is worried about political correctness. One of the values that a scout is taught is to overcome problems and make it work. This life lesson is easily taught here.

Week 2 - 2017. They were super short-staffed. With just a few exceptions, much of the staff didn't know the material they were teaching. Prepare yourself to walk 6 to 10 miles per day to get around.
The waterfront, while beautiful, was too small for swimming. The lake is inviting in 90 degree heat and the little swim area is too small to handle 600 scouts. They could do so much more with this.

The food was horrible, but I am finding that is to be expected at Boy Scout Camp. Their new dining hall is spectacular, but there is no flow. They had one line come in from the side and one directly through the middle. The boys were bunching up around the food line exit. They should make improvements before the end of summer, or it will be a lonely summer next year. We won't be heading back.

They were short-staffed, my son got food poisoning, and a scout who inappropriately touched a boy from our group and was allowed to stay.

Never. Again.

I worked on staff here this past summer in 2016, and I made so many memories and friends that I probably wouldn't have made if I didn't go.
I'm from a different council, and I would say that it's abs...olutely worth the drive to Shaver Lake See More

The location is fabulous and there is plenty for the scouts to do. Would've given it 5 stars but the food was an issue.

Camp Chawanakee is a picturesque camp high in the Sierras and has many merit badge activities, such as horsemanship, climbing and black powder rifle shooting. The bridge is also very wonderful to walk across.

Hello everyone.

We are on site at Camp Chawanakee now for the Klondike Derby and are starting to do the final setup.

After arriving at camp here is an update on the road into camp is it’s mostly dry but has a few spots of mud coming in so please drive at the recommended 15 mph. With this in mind you will be driving into camp and parking in the parking lot to offload your gear and set up camp in the parade grounds. While the troop sets up camp we ask your Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster check in at the camp office so we can give your unit your check in packet including your passports and patches. Our office will be open late into the night so if you arrive late please do check in.
