After a decade of tireless efforts to earn a place on your FM dial, the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) went live at 107.1 this Saturday! And we were honored to learn that "Slow Down Chicago" was the second song played! We couldn't be prouder of our friends Shawn, Jenny, Michael, Tony, Craig, Nick, Steve and the gang. Founder Shawn's Campbell's opening salvo of spins from 10/21 - along with an emotional intro and some kind words about Canasta - can be heard here (http://radiofreeamerica.com/dj/shawn-campbell). And as always, CHIRP can still be streamed live here (http://chirpradio.org).

My mystical-but-true Tom Petty story:

Late Sunday night on the way home from a gig, I had an out-of-the-blue urge to revisit his catalog for the first time in ...a long time, so I naturally went for the Greatest Hits on Spotify. I had fun casually singing along to one irreproachable hit after another, until I got to Learning To Fly. I’d heard this tune a million times, but this time, I found myself so moved by his vocal performance that I had to pull over and truly listen. For the first time, I noticed his magical combination of vulnerability and poise that made him stand out from his pack; that signature vocal quiver that at once courageously exposes one’s own frailty, while cradling it with the hard-earned wisdom that nothing is certain but it is worth plowing on anyway. And I realized Tom Petty was not just an objectively iconic songsmith with a refreshingly unpretentious persona; he was artistically *great* in ways I typically reserved for a select shortlist of (other) artists. When I got home and started unloading, I thought to myself, “Man, he’s gonna be one of those artists who dies someday and makes everyone really sad." For some reason, I even went so far as to think about which song of his I'd choose to cover in tribute, many years down the road of course. Little did I know that he was approaching brain death at that very moment. I’m glad I was able to discover his true magic before he left us, if only for a brief overlap. Anyway, this one’s for you, Tom. Thank you for everything.

This might be the dopest four minutes of 2017. (Spoiler alert: 2010's Canasta / Pop It Off Boyz mashup by Hood Internet member STV SLV did not make the cut, heh.)

THE HOOD INTERNET presents 40 YEARS OF HIP HOP

Over 150 songs from more than 100 artists representing 40 years of hip hop all crammed into 4 minutes. It’s not a... chronological history of hip hop. It’s rappers from different eras finishing each other’s rhymes over intersecting beats, all woven together to make one song.

Soundgarden's music had a huge impact on Josh, Jeremy and myself (Matt), so Josh's tribute to Chris Cornell is perfectly at home here on Canasta's page...

Took a moment for Chris Cornell last night, and well of course it’s Black Hole Sun. “No one sings like you anymore..” Damn. Thanks for everything.

Changing the station
Does nothing
To make you feel any less
A guilty part of the rest of the world

...

Turning the channel
Does nothing
To separate you
From the voices that spew
But don’t speak for us

Feels like you’re bound
Feels like they speak for you
Doing things in your name
Things you would never do

When thoughts swim like these
Tell me how anyone
With living to do
Is supposed to get any done

Throwing your hands up
Does something
To make you feel better
After skipping that letter you’d meant to write

Aiming at neighbors
Does something
To separate you from the guilt that you didn’t do
All you could

Feels like you’re bound
Feels like they speak for you
Doing things in your name
Things you would never do

When thoughts swim like these
Tell me how anyone
With living to do
Is supposed to get any done

Our own Josh Lava recorded a beautiful tribute to both Leonard Cohen and perseverance in the face of darkness...

Josh Lava

As heartbreaking as this week has been for many of us, I am restored by the words of the great Leonard Cohen (rest in peace), who implores us to "Ring the bells... that still can ring." Despite the ugliness now besieging us, I have been utterly humbled and inspired by the beautiful people all around me committed to fighting the good fight. "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." You are that light, and I see you.
