Facebook reality labs is driving research towards a vision of an always-on AR devices that provide contextually relevant assistance across a variety of tasks. Doing this requires developing novel algorithms and computational models that integrate output from scene/context recognition systems (e.g. computer vision) and human-facing sensor data (e.g. eye-tracking) to infer the AR user’s intent. To this end, we are looking for PhD interns with expertise in developing computational models of human perception and cognition. In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers within and outside Facebook. Together, you will apply state-of-the-art computational cognitive science in ecologically realistic settings, use what you learn to advance our understanding of human perception and cognition, and lay the groundwork for the next paradigm for human-focused computing. This internship is sixteen to twenty-six weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

RESEARCH INTERN, AI AND COMPUTATIONAL COGNITIVE SCIENCE (UNIVERSITY GRAD) RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan and execute cutting-edge theoretical and computational research to advance AR/VR interaction technologies in one or more of the following areas:
  • Computational models of vision or multi-sensory perception, memory, attention, decision making, and/or emotion with application to naturalistic human-world interaction
  • Advance methods in visual-question asking or answering for first person video (e.g. to demonstrate the ability to identify or answer questions people ask about their context)
  • Develop methods to use eye-tracking data in combination with scene data to infer cognitive state
  • Advance probabilistic models of human-AI dynamics (e.g. human-robot interaction)
  • Develop AI algorithms inspired by observations of human cognitive processes (e.g. learning and memory)
  • Collaborate with teams across FRL to develop a shared computational model of the human as the basis for developing novel interaction paradigms in AR and VR.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in cognitive science, psychology, engineering, computer science, statistics, or related fields.
  • Track record of successful research applying probabilistic statistics / machine learning to problems in cognitive science and/or neuroscience.
  • Excellent research skills (defining problems, exploring solutions, and analyzing and presenting results).
  • Familiarity with python, R, and/or C++.
  • Experience with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op
  • Interdisciplinary publication record (computer vision, visual-question asking/answering, theoretical AI and cognitive science).
  • Strong proficiency in python
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing.
