Bishops from El Salvador are joining bishops from the United States in the nation’s capital this week, in an effort to remind government officials of what will happen if over 200,000 Salvadorans lose their protected status under U.S. immigration law and are deported to their home country.

"“Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear, firm and passionate. Equally sacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned.”

In an apostolic exhortation, Pope Francis suggests that issues of migration and poverty are not secondary issues compared with bioethical questions.

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has sent some Burmese refugees letters asking that they come to the local office for a voluntary interview. USCIS has asked some refugees to sign a sworn statement detailing their experiences before coming to the US.

Our concern is that memories can be faulty, translators can make errors and seemingly unimportant details could lead to reopening an individual’s eligibility for refugee status. USCIS could ...use inconsistent details within a statement to conclude that a refugee committed fraud in obtaining refugee status. This in turn could lead to deportation proceedings.

What is clear is that no one should attend this interview without a competent attorney. Some people mistakenly believe that refugees are never deported from the United States. Refugees, however, can be deported as can any immigrant.

Please understand that these interviews are voluntary. No one is required to attend the interview or to sign a sworn statement. USCIS did state that failure to appear will not prevent USCIS from taking appropriate steps that may have an impact on a refugee’s immigration status. That statement makes it all the more clear that no refugee should attend any interview without a competent attorney.

The Supreme Court decided today that it will not take up DACA case, and will instead leave it to be heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals first. This means that DACA holders will continue being able to renew their work permits, but the future of the program is still uncertain.

The court said the government's appeal on the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program should be heard by a court of appeals first. Trump had wanted to end the program by March 5.
