Good luck to our friends at Santa Clara University on their Second Chance Hackathon this weekend! Check out their post for info on last minute registration.
This weekend 120 advocates, public servants, students, and experts in tech and law are gathering on campus to work in teams for an unusual Second Chance Hackath...on. Their goal? To help states clear criminal records of those deemed worthy of a “second chance.” Dozens of states have second-chance laws, but few people benefit from them, finds Santa Clara Law Prof. Colleen Chien. Learn more about this weekend’s program, cosponsored by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Kettering Foundation. Find out more about the program here: https://bit.ly/2PeWlAf
See MoreIn 2017, Matilda Cortez and her former colleagues at a hotel in Oakland decided to fight back against wage theft. Tired of being mistreated, underpaid, and unlawfully asked to work long hours without breaks or sick leave, they decided enough was enough.
With help from the team at Public Rights Project (pictured), the Oakland City Attorney’s office partnered with La Raza Centro Legal, a local community organization, to take on Matilda’s case. Together, they successfully filed ...a lawsuit against the hotel and and its parent company for violating state and local labor laws.
Cases like Matilda’s are a prime example of the work of our partners Public Rights Project. We’re proud to support their efforts to transform a justice system that too often focuses on incarceration, rather than community health and safety. By working within state and local law offices, their aim is to shift the system’s priorities from punishment to protection, taking up cases that fight discrimination, enforce civil rights, and expand opportunity for all.
