NBC10 Philadelphia aired a great piece on the new residential and commercial development at 8208-16 Germantown Avenue and how it will benefit Chestnut Hill. Take a look.

The town is gorgeous and I can't wait to go back and visit the restaurants, bakeries and stores on a day where there isn't a festival. We were looking forward to this event for a while and when we arrived we were disappointed. Parking was atrocious! Even when we asked for help (people that were working the lots) we got directed to areas where the lots were already full, which I felt they should have known. We drove around for 45 minutes before parking. There were no signs directing us to any lots. Once we got to the festival it was so packed you couldn't even move. It wasn't until we got to the end of the festival that we could walk without being pushed. On our way through the festival you couldn't see inside any of the stores. And if you wanted to do anything Harry Potter related you had to wait in line for over 45 min up to a couple of hours. Tents in the street with lines going from every which direction made it hard to get around to the sidewalks let alone anything. Very disorganized and very disappointed. Will not be recommending this to anyone in years to come. Afficher la suite

This was my 3rd year in attendance- I will say the pub crawl was the best of all the years. Previously the streets were dead after10 pm. There was a decent crowd and I enjoyed it. The festival....just no. It's scary to think what the crowd would have been like If it had been beautiful weather. Parking was horrendous. CHestnut grill And iron hill brewery gave a 6 hour reservation time, iron hill actually stop taking reservations. If people are this desperate to have a place to eat you have got to have more vendors. People waited over an hour for a port a potty, the crowd was like being herded by cattle and u couldn't stop and look at anything nor was their room in the stores. Agree with the previous reviewer that the lines were so long u couldn't even tell what they were in line for. I did wait in a line about 40 mins at the bakery and the HP themed treats were great. But there just wasn't that much HP themed stuff. I saw one woman with a table of HP ornaments and keychains and that was it as far as merch. She must have made a bundle bc that's the kind of stuff people want to see. It was great to see people in costume and I knew this year was going to be bigger than previous years but it just went too big. The "cute little street fair" it once was became a hazard. We were fortunate to have a great time! My daughter is a huge fan, she's 10...we left our little one at home because we were anticipating the crowds. We arrived early, got in line for our butter beer because I had read that the line was really long last year and got it quickly. Took the opportunity to get all the pictures we wanted before the crowds rolled in. By 12 it was a bit crazy but we had done what we felt like was a great amount of stuff and by that time, we were not only ready for lunch (we we chose to drive out of town to do), we were ok with wrapping up our few hours there. Chestnut Hill is one of my most favorite towns, I'm sorry to see that others didn't get to experience what a great area it is. Hopefully the crowds/bathroom/food issues is a great learning experience for the organizers, who I'm sure invested alot of their time putting it together, probably still shell shocked by the immense crowds. (I help with my local town's community day, although not on this huge theme level, so I know the time it takes to put it all together). Thank you for a great experience for my daughter! The town of Chestnut Hill is absolutely beautiful. I will come back to visit the town, see the stores, eat at the restaurants etc. As for the festival .. this was the most unorganized event I have ever been to in my life. There should have been signs for parking or even to show where the event was, and there should have been someone directing traffic. I did not get to participate in a single harry potter activity. The lines were extremely long and there was nowhere to go to the bathroom. The restaurants and food trucks were so busy you couldn't even get something to eat. I suggest better organization and maybe sell tickets to the events so people may enjoy it, or stretch it out over more days. I am so disappointed. I drove 2 hours to be pushed around by a bunch of rude adults in harry potter capes. Make some changes. Will not suggest to anyone. Afficher la suite

The town was adorable and the residents and employees were super friendly.
We came for the Harry Potter Festival which is a wonderful idea and the setting is perfect. The college looks like Hogwarts, the village feels like Hogsmede and the train station couldnt be more perfect! I wish next year it would be a month long celebration, or the event would have a cap at how many people could attend. There were simply too many people there yesterday to even enjoy ourselves. We couldnt shop, dine, or attend many of the events because of all the lines and crowds. There wasnt enough organization and the whole day felt chaotic and we really didnt get to savor the magic of Harry Potter. Not a good time for families with small children. It is a fabulous idea so I hope it will be better organized in the future ! Afficher la suite

Very disappointed with the way you handled the ticket sales for Harry Potter Pub Crawl. I had the time and date set, was on the site at 10am, and the tickets weren't available for purchase until after 10:00am. I couldn't get in and by the time I did, I was in a long queue and it sold out. You heavily promote something, but then can't even have a decent user experience. You also know how quickly they sell out, and don't limit the number of tickets per purchase to help distribute the ticket access. I am shocked that you would only be concerned about selling out and $$$. Afficher la suite

It was our first time at the event and we were disappointed. The crowds were unbelievable and seemed to overwhelm all those involved with the event. Chestnut Hill is just a local neighborhood and not a big city like NYC so they seemed completely unable to manage the massive amount of people that showed up. We spoke to people that had traveled from New Jersey, Maryland & Maine just to name a few. It did seem like it became bigger than life through social media and as a result people came out in throngs like they were heading to Universal in Florida or something. It's just not meant to be that type of event. The weather did not help the whole situation nor did being in a wheelchair. Navigating the cobblestone streets, steep curb cuts and sloping pavements was difficult enough but trying to do all that while getting around the crowds was near impossible. This was not Harry Potter at his best but more like "A Series of Unfortunate Events". Afficher la suite

I feel like the Harry Potter festival was handled in a pretty fine matter. This festival went viral because of articles from Buzzfeed and Huffington Post that came out not even 2 months before the festival. Yes, there was a ton of people but nobody could have known that there would be that many people there. It isn't that easy to plan an event like that and they obviously weren't expecting such a large turn out. Everything could have been much worse. The vibes were great, the cosplaying was great, the people were great, and I personally can't wait to go again next year. Afficher la suite

The 2016 Harry Potter Festival was an unfortunate nightmare. We planned ahead for public transportation but did not remotely expect what appeared to be 5 portable toilets spread around the festival for 50,000+ people? We waited in line for more than an hour to use a portable toilet that had not been serviced all day. The one trashcan we saw was overflowing by noon so empty bottles were rolling around the street. The general lack of organization/preparation for the crowds was truly shocking and made it impossible to enjoy the event. Afficher la suite

Chestnut Hill itself is a gorgeous town, one I'd return to at a different time, but unfortunately never again for this event. Thankfully we arrived quite early, 9:30a, to avoid traffic and parking nightmares and based on other reviews thank god we did. We found parking very quickly but that was no thanks to the event posting signs indicating the color coded parking lots. We just happened upon the lot. Quite a few people arrived early and nothing was set up yet, by the time it was it was so packed you couldn't enjoy it. The only businesses that seemed to have it together were Bredenbeck's bakery and the hardware co selling wands. When we left we couldn't find our parking lot in the confusion of the crowd. Asking a police officer didn't help he seemed to know absolutely nothing about the event. Not one person at the any of the booths had information either, nor could redirect us to who would. When we did find our car, there were no detour signs for those of us not from the area to lead us out of town or past the area of Germantown that was blocked off. My suggestion for the future would be more police officers (educated on the event), detour signs, and more signs in general. Good luck next year! Afficher la suite

I'm very disappointed with the handling of the pub crawl tickets. I was unable to purchase them online even though I had waited since 9:30. The website crashed and I was cued in the 400's, only to be told it was sold out. I immediately called and was placed on the wait list for 4 tickets (me and some friends). I was called this morning and told I would only be receiving two tickets instead of the four I signed up for despite the fact I am first on the list and others behind me are recieving them. I understand that they want to make the pub crawl available to as many people as possible. Had I known this my friends would've called too so they could be on the list too. So now, only half of us can go? How is this fair? It's hard to play by the rules when they are constantly changing them. If they were reallly interested in making this event accessible then they should've limited tickets to one person each at the initial sale. Very disappointed. With that said, I think they try very hard to have a fun family friendly event and I'm very glad they have it each year and for all the hard work that clearly goes into it. Also, kudos for closing the street to cars this year. Afficher la suite

A lot of reviews I have already read said what I believe, which include the massive traffic problem. Just finding a parking spot was about an hour of driving. The reviews also included the insanely long lines, the lack of organization with staff, and on the map (once we could find one), as well as business signs for food and drink. I think I might have seen the Quidditch if the map showed how to get there. I never made it. Obviously there will be problems with a crowd of that unexpected magnitude. What I haven't read though, so far, was how disappointed I was with how many businesses drew you through their doors with a Harry Potter type of affiliation window sign, but had nothing within to buy that was relating to Harry Potter.
Learn and conquer these problems, or don't. I will not be going next year, and this was my first year going.

There was way too many people with not enough structure. We walked up as we are local. My husband did not go to the festival we are 1.3 miles away people were parked all over our neighbor hood. Both sides of the road on curves so much so cars could not pass much less emergency trucks if needed.

At the festival
We could not get into the shops to the food vendors without massive waits. It took over 2 hours to take the shuttle to the cup fields.
Fortunately went to the pub crawl and got to go in some shops. We also got treats at bredenbecks fri pm or we never would have made it down there.

Chestnut hill itself seems very quaint. Probably a lovely place to visit. The Harry Potter festival was a complete disaster.
1) no one anywhere wearing identification that they worked for this event
2) zero, not a single person doing traffic control or parking directions
3) invisible signage: when it is shoulder to shoulder you can't read a hand written sign on a sheet of paper as to what is in the tent. Fighting through crowds to see is this a food tent? Of no, it's a crappy craft, or a gift tent that's already sold out. Signage needs to be large and on top of tents
4) butter beer and drinks in general: 45 min in line to buy $5 Dixie cup of hot butter beer. Universal doesn't gauge you that bad. Put all the food drinks near each other and TRIPLE the people serving.
5) SPEAKERS: it might, just might have taken the edge off the day if we could have even heard anything being said on stage. The bank on the corner had music playing louder than the speakers talking on stage. (And Maybe play the movie soundtrack music instead of Donna summer?)
6) sell tickets and limit admission to keep the crowds down or make major changes.

We drove 6 hours to get there and left after 2. It was just impossible to get around with children and mine were 8 years old. The weather wasn't great, but even if it had been 60 and sunny it wouldn't have helped. People were walking for miles to get to this because of parking, and I'm sure they were disappointed when they got there.

The wait for each activity (at least an hour each line, even for a butter beer) with the festival only being a day (11am-5pm, minus the conference and pub crawl on Friday) in my opinion was not enough time for the amount of people that attended the festival (it was so packed you could barely move). It was a great concept, but the allotted time and organization need a lot of improvement. Afficher la suite

The city of Chestnut Hill needs to get more organized when hosting events. The Harry Potter festival was an absolutely nightmare. I live in NYC and have never seen crowds like this at any event we have. There were no workers to organize the crowds and there were points where you couldn't even walk. You were literally being pushed into the people in front of you. I'd be really surprised if no one got hurt at this festival. You could not get to any stands because the lines were so long and it was so crowded that you couldn't even tell where the lines began.

Do a better job next year and get more organized. It might help if you separate the food stands instead of having them all in one area. That seemed to be where the crowds were at its worse. You are looking at a huge liability if you do not get yourself more organized for the amount of people this festival draws.

We came from
Montreal to see this event and we ´re very disapointed. Same element as the other comment, crowd was so big that we could'nt see anything , there was only few items in the window display and no harry potter items in the shop... no parking etc... We made a 30 minutes lineup for the butterbeer and taste hawful... (apple juice and whipped cream... it wasnt the real recipe) Good effort but not worthy for 8hours travel :( Afficher la suite

We had such a beautiful/relaxing day✨ Stopped at the deli for delicious soups, bagels, biscuits all of which we enjoyed while taking a break from visiting the different unique shops✨ It was such a pleasant experience and so welcoming that we will be back again soon to visit the many shops we loved and those we had missed because of our time restraint that day🌷 Afficher la suite

It was our first time attending the event and I had an absolute phenomenal time. My boyfriend and I knew the fan base and expected the crazy so we got there by 8:30 am. We were able to check out every store and booth. And luckily didn't experience any crazy lines. So buy the time the craziness came we already had the butterbeer, butterbeer bread, and anything else we wanted. The town was beautiful but I definitely didn't enjoy the walk to the college. The costumes were amazing!!!!! Thank you guys for a wonderful weekend Afficher la suite
