- This morning I went to the farmers market, specifically for meat. Th...ere was one stand selling chickens. His price per pound was pretty low considering -$4. I asked about breed and how long they were raised. Here's what he told me. They are Red Rangers, they live 18 weeks (seemed long but since it's a heritage bird, maybe these guys go that much longer) and - here's what I didn't get- he said they don't supplement them with feed at all. He said they are not organic - is said I didn't care about that but asked for more info on how they go 18 weeks with nothing but what they free range. He said they live with the pigs and they move them. Not in chicken tractors but in different pastures. He did say they electrify it to keep the foxes out. He wasn't super forthcoming with information, not that he was hiding it but probably more because his clients are city residents who like the idea of pasture raised but maybe don't want to think of them as birds? He was also pretty young, not the farm owner. He also told me they had a Ranger that they kept till she was 2 so they could breed their own birds and she got to be 25 pounds. I asked what they did with her since as a stew bird that seemed kind of nuts. He said they cooked her and ate her "like a turkey". My questions are: 1. 18 weeks? 2. No feed at all seem right? Maybe they are eating what the pigs don't? 3. Giant 2 year old ranger that's somehow a roasted bird? Any thoughts on this, community? See More

- Hi Chicken Thistle crew! I'm sure you've mentioned or written about ...it somewhere, I did a search on the website and this page but could find a reference. Can you provide the information on both the trail camera you use and your driveway alarm? Thanks! See More
Kathaleen Banríon Giofógach5starI've just stumbled across CoopCast, and I'm loving it! The good natured banter between the hosts makes it fun to listen ...and learn, and holds my attention while I'm working at our own little homestead. The final element that won my loyalty? The fact that both hosts have unapologet ically stated that neither of them are experts (even though they have years of experience between them), which creates a relationsh ip of equality between listener and presenters . Thanks for your hard work, and passion to share your stories! :) See More
5starI am really loving your podcast. I dream of having our own little farm someday and I am gaining so much insight. I am on...ly on #22 but listening everyday as I do do housework to catch up. I was really excited to find sugar hill pork at my local co-op here in VT after hearing you talk about what a great farm they are. My husband is starting a garden and getting some great tips too.
