Foreign Service Day
This Foreign Service Day, Senator Dan Sullivan and I are introducing the Foreign Service Families Act. As someone who grew up in a Foreign Service family, I know firsthand the immense impact our diplomats have on furthering American security, interests, and values abroad. We owe it to our Foreign Service officers and their families to provide them with the support they need as they represent our country in posts around the world.
That’s why two years ago Dan and I launched the Foreign Service Caucus to provide a bipartisan forum for senators to collaborate and develop policy recommendations on how Congress can best support the men and women of our diplomatic corps. One of the major challenges faced by Foreign Service families is the lack of opportunity for spouses to work overseas. Frequent moves, language barriers, and limited options pose significant barriers to family members seeking work.
Our legislation, which is modeled after measures our military has taken to expand work opportunities for their to family members deployed overseas, will provide more employment opportunities to Foreign Service spouses. These families accept significant sacrifices to serve our nation and we should do everything we can to support their important mission. I urge Congress to take up this common sense measure immediately.
