Sophie, the Countess of Wessex was on-hand in Edmonton this morning to celebrate the unveiling of Light Horse Park.

This well visited park (home to the "Kids Fringe" in August) remained unnamed until 2012 when it was named Light Horse Park in honour of the South Albertan Light Horse and the units it now represents and as homage to the rich horsemanship Alberta became famous for in WWI.

Located just a few blocks south of Whyte Avenue, this "green" park has recycled bricks a...nd paving stones that were all part of older projects, some over 100 years old!

Do you admire the historical trestle bridges when you visit Mill Creek Ravine?

The City of Edmonton is currently undertaking an assessment of five wooden pedestrian bridges in Mill Creek Ravine. The trestle bridges were originally built as part of a railway line that once ran through Mill Creek Ravine.

Based on the findings of the assessment, the City will proceed with a rehabilitation of the structures. The City recognizes the trails in the area are heavily used, and that th...e bridges are historically significant.

The City is interested in your comments and feedback. Please take a few minutes to complete the online survey. This survey will be open until midnight on July 18, 2016.

The River Valley Wayfinding project is about helping you know where you are, where you need to go and how to get there.

To help you find your way in Gold Bar Park, new signs have been installed. The City of Edmonton is now asking you to tell us what you think about the new signage. Gold Bar is the first park to roll out the new family of signs that will be used in all future river valley park and trail projects.

Citizens are encouraged to visit Gold Bar Park to view the sign...s and then complete a short survey to tell us if the signs are informative, easy to read, well-placed and effective. If you can’t visit the park but wish to make comment, photos in the survey will allow you to view the signs. The online survey will be available from June 10 to July 22.

The River Valley Wayfinding project addresses the need for consistent signage throughout the River Valley park system. Feedback provided will assist in making final adjustments to these signs before they are installed in other river valley parks and trails.

The City of Edmonton honoured Constable Daniel Woodall today by naming a park after the fallen police officer. Constable Woodall was killed in the line of duty one year ago on June 8, 2015.

Daniel Woodall Park is located at 7304 South Terwillegar Drive. Family and colleagues attended a dedication ceremony recognizing Constable Woodall’s service and sacrifice to Edmontonians. He was 35 years old and served with the Edmonton Police Service for eight years.

“Constable Dan Woodal...l Park will provide a place where all Edmontonians, the citizens Dan gave his life to protect, can come to enjoy time with their families and friends,” says EPS Chief Rod Knecht. “It is a fitting legacy for a man who was as passionately committed to his family as he was to his distinguished, but far too brief, career with the Edmonton Police Service.”

The park includes a new soccer pitch, in recognition of Constable Woodall’s love of soccer. It also features an Autumn Blaze Maple Tree planted with compost created from the flowers given to police after Constable Woodall’s death.

"The City is humbled to be able to dedicate this park to a man that gave his life to protect his his fellow citizens,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “For generations to come, Edmontonians will enjoy this park and remember the bravery, the commitment and the sacrifice of Constable Woodall .”

When complete, the park will be home to walking paths, a baseball diamond, toboggan hill, and a children’s playground.

The naming of the park was approved last fall by the City’s Naming Committee.
