Next month, The Mid County Chamber of Commerce will recognize the hard work and tremendous efforts of the Public Works Department in Maplewood and Richmond Heights.

From The Mid County Chamber of Commerce on recognizing the Public Works:

"They are the community’s 'angels in orange'. The Public Works/Parks Department keeps our streets, sidewalks, and parks landscaped, plowed, salted, mowed, clean, and watered. In the blazing heat and bitter cold, their work continues- hanging ...holiday lights on busy streets, planting trees in residents yards, and putting out logistical fires throughout our communities.

If we compare our city operations to a clock, the Public Works Department serves as the inside gears, wheels, and springs, the stuff that makes the clock tick. Time clocks are an essential part of our daily life. We look at and rely on clocks to keep order in our day and yet give little thought to the “behind the scenes” mechanisms working to move the needle ahead for just one minute. Like clockwork is the Public Works Department.

Please join us in recognizing and celebrating the efforts of the Public Works Departments. It’s as simple as-as submitting a quick message of thanks. The Chamber will compile all messages and present to each department, along with lunch, in late March.

Messages can be submitted online or a handwritten card/letter can be dropped off or mailed to our office at 2915 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood, MO 63143"

It is with heavy hearts that we post that our flags are drawn to half-staff for another senseless tragedy.

Here is the information we received:

Presidential Proclamation Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy in Parkland, Florida

...

Issued on: February 15, 2018

Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones in the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on February 14, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, February 19, 2018. Our Public Works crew is here and ready to move when bad weather sets in. Keep an eye out for the salt trucks and plows.

The Maplewood Public Works Department wants to remind you of ways you can help us do a better job of clearing streets:

❄️If possible, do not park your vehicle on the street. This will allow us to plow and spread salt closer to the curb.

...

❄️Also, snow will not be plowed against your vehicle. Digging out your car is no fun.

❄️Wait until plows have finished clearing the street before clearing your driveway. If you must leave during a snowstorm, clear five feet of curb before your driveway. This reduces the possibility of the plow driver leaving snow in your driveway.

❄️Stay back at least 50 feet from plow trucks. You will avoid damage from salt from the spreader hitting your vehicle.

❄️Do not shovel snow onto a fire hydrant. You never know when that hydrant will be used to put out a fire.
