In February 1818, Harriet Bailey gave birth to Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. Harriet spent little time with her son and Frederick later wrote, "I have ...no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it." However, he eventually adopted February 14th as the day to commemorate his birth.

Sixty years after his birth, Frederick (who chose the surname Douglass after he escaped from slavery) was no longer considered property by anyone. He was an abolitionist, advocate for men and women to access voting, author, and well-known orator. In his sixtieth year, the well traveled Mr. Douglass visited Petersburg, Virginia.

On October 31, 1878, he joined three other men who had once been enslaved: Peter G. Morgan, a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates 1869-1871; Captain John Henry Hill, an organizer of a militia company; and Reverend Leonard A. Black, then the pastor of Petersburg’s First Baptist Church, in a visit to the Crater battlefield.

In honor of the 200th anniversary year of Frederick Douglass' birth, you are invited to see the Crater visitor register which Douglass and the other men signed in the Eastern Front Visitor Center from now until Wednesday, June 13, 2018. You too can go to the Crater battlefield. Lastly, make sure to follow our colleagues at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site for more on Douglass' long and interesting life.

I think Petersburg need to clean house of everyone sitting on them boards . From the school to the court system . They stealing from a city that's already economically depressed. The cops are corrupt ...not all !!! The Correctional system treat our brothers like animals instead of teaching and rehabilitating. The city in 98 percent black but yet our neighborhood businesses are owned by Arab and Asians !!! Petersburg played a mayor part in the history book that should be taught . From the underground tunnel in downtown to the priceless Tiffany glasses windows in blandford Church !! To the slave trading blocks and auction held in downtown . Petersburg have more churches in a one mile radius then any other city in the USA !! If you believe in one God there should be only 1 church . Will be pushed back to indention servants by temp company that hire my people with the hope of full time employment . Only to terminate there work assignment to cover not having to give health care and benefits See More

I believe Petersburg is a beautiful city that needs a little love and inspiration. Petersburg should focus more on the education and production of there students to introduce a more profound city. Let...'s not be so harsh about an amazing city with a very immaculate history. Instead, lets reconcile, renovate, and rebuild this city!!! See More

The Cavaliers’ home games will continue to be held at Petersburg High School, with their season opening at PHS on Saturday, March 3.

“I can’t wait to play these guys because a lot of these teams are going around feeling like they got the better of us last year,” Dixon said. So the Cavaliers want to get the jump on them early, he added - set the precedence early on.
