So the night before yesterday, I took my brothers were going their first thing in the morning. I will wake up early, so we missed the crowd so I get up maybe like 640 - five. No. no. I get up like run 540 - 560 'clock and go pick up my brother and we get to Marshall High School around 650. This is already a huge line and I'm like Oh my gosh. my brother forgot actually the cover of his mouth with something so I gave him what I had and then I used my goodies that I had earlier that day to cover my Both that will serve wrecking cuz I thought we'd be able to miss. you know the crowds that were there, but obviously that wasn't the case for the most part. When I first got there. a lot of people were trying to get closer to the door poll workers immediately started telling people space out make sure there are six feet and then after they did that some of the poll workers took masking tape and also use some chalk in the parking lot to measure out six feet the hour. Well, the total weight that we were there was about an hour and 30 minutes. I didn't go into the building of my brother cuz once we got to the actual door, they had people lined up to buy one a vote. This is the vote. I thought it was best to stay outside. wait for him. I'm sure some things I saw there were a couple of people that were lighthearted about the situation, which is good at least they weren't so disheartened by what was going on. There are some people that were angry that were saying there's no way a city. This large only have five polling spots and to find. Madison, the second largest I think it Wisconsin has 60 - six, so don't wait. Can I ask you a question? Yes. absolutely answer to this question. So this is not a setup. What was the racial demographic of the people waiting in line where you were it was mostly it was mostly black and Brown people there they're definitely obviously my individuals there as well, but the majority was black and Brown individuals there that were there to vote. you had elderly people that were there people that were disabled and at some point I saw them I don't know what this tent was so I decided to check it out once my brother would come back he comes back and actually I see a friend of mine who was asking a poll worker about where to drop her absentee ballot because she didn't know if she had the right place to have the witness signature. So once you got that information at Texture, the information where she can go drop off her absentee ballot, we're walking back. There's no really set pathway for people to have. Voted to exit out of the building, so you're not obviously walking walking through the line people that are still waiting to work. It went to the tent and that's actually where people can register to vote as well as dual purpose by voting for our elderly or disabled. So that's what that area was for. But while we're walking back, there was police presence there. I'm sure to make sure everything was well since this is happened during pandemics. so I'm sure they were there to make sure things are trying to run smoothly and well The. Go online and we're upset that people are walking too close to them, but she is like they're walking too close. Can you tell them move back? so there is definitely a sense of. Irritation I think is too soft to say probably indefinitely some hesitation, but there's also I think the spirit of determination you just sense cuz everyone was there. most people have their mouths covered in their head loves on some people didn't for those that did it. I personally stood back a little bit further because you really didn't know yeah, who would be positive or not and it wasn't until I got in my car with my brother where I'm realizing I am I exposed. Is this gonna happen is this enough to actually shift what's happening in Milwaukee and I think Sean taking a little bit more to this, but everyone is pretty much up for reelection to say Milwaukee so this election on top of Wisconsin Supreme Court can dramatically shift a lot of things in terms of political power and change here in the city. so lots of state today with Covey the pandemic People's Health, as well as just what's moving forward for the city of Milwaukee. Well, I wanna thank you. Voting early and I wanna thank you for taking your brother to go vote. you said a lot there and there's a lot to unpack first predominantly black and Brown people getting in line because they closed a bunch of polling locations but left other polling locations open in the city. so that is how voter suppression lives, but also you mentioned a signature match. Chante can you explain what a signature match is and why is that a good thing? a bad thing like why other States should or? Should not be using that particularly in a pandemic, yes, so Alex Plaine, the signature match is basically once once a person receives their ballot, There's an envelope that the ballot has to be either mailed back into or returned into in that particular ballot and the voter must sign and date the ballot and it also a witness so another individual whom whom is a resident of the state as least 18, also must sign that particular ballot with that signature, it is extremely important that individuals that whoever witnessed that. Ballot also provides their home address if they do not provide their home address that valid is considered of avoid valid or spoiled ballot and this when you talk about being in the midst of a pandemic, it is very very challenging because there are those who are either homebound or those who may not necessarily be able to leave their home because maybe a doctor has asked them to self self quarantine or maybe they live alone. We have people who may have disabilities and if a person lives alone and they don't have anyone in their House. I actually have a friend. She picked me on Facebook last night and she's like who can sign my ballot and I'm like are you at home? She actually came to my House. Wow find a test as a witness on her ballot. and so when you think about that she literally had to put her life at risk in order to get that signature that witness signature if she was a person. Who was maybe supposed to be quarantined or something of that nature? Maybe she had health issues. maybe she has asthma or something of that nature. That's really challenging and very scary in the midst of a pandemic makes your question about this. I don't vote. I'm from this great state of Ohio I have had it and I voted absentee before and I have never had to do a signature match it just yeah. It is literally in my opinion, one of the most oppressive things that you can have in this whole process of requesting an absentee ballot because we are also we've also been ordered as a state by our governor to stay at home. So how do we how do we meet the requirements of Signature The signature requirement of a witness when we're also ordered to stay at home. It's contradictory. I think just within its process, Alright so Wisconsin people can still vote. the occasion is still open what time do they close? Yes, eight O 'clock tonight. you can vote. of course. If you go in person, we always say, Take your photo ID. Take a electric bill or a Bank statement or bring it up on your phone, some type of proof of residency as well as your ID. take that information with you as well as if you have a ballot and you need to drop that ballot That the ability to drop a ballot off. It's also available until eight O 'clock and I will say if you are in line by eight O 'clock or at eight O 'clock, they cannot turn you away. It is state law. They have to allow you to cast your ballot so if you are in line by eight O 'clock, please if you will stay there and go ahead and allow your voice to be heard. Alright. So before we close out, it's the first turn up Tuesday and let me just tell you a little bit about turn on Tuesday. turn Tuesday Going to do every single Tuesday until November election to ensure that people like you, people like me, people like you Shante can have an opportunity to vote that is fair and safe, have an opportunity where places polling places aren't closing in black and Brown communities where we get rid of ridiculous and oppressive and suppressive tactics like a signature mat. So I'mma come to both of you if you had to do if you have to turn up one time on someone who has tried to soon. Pressure vote or prevent you from voting on what would you tell them Dora What would I tell them turn up? So if they told me that I couldn't vote, Watch me. Watch me. Watch me That's that was consistent Milwaukee watching me. he could tell me no don't do it. Watch me. I will show you I will prove you wrong and I personally I know people have different opinions about today and it's understandable but from where we come from. That's just not what I'm gonna be cut out for. still if you gonna make it that hard, I'm gonna show you how tough I can be so watch me. Watch me show me what I and we as a community can do that's awesome. Hey, what's your turn up? Alright my turnout would potentially be one. I tell individuals that something that I used to say when I was younger, my son's now saying, like you're not the boss of me like we're we're not in a position where we can be limited, you know, and that's the thing that I wanna encourage everyone like we have the power as a people and we have the ability to really create space where we can take that power back and so if a person attempted to suppress me, my thought process would yell like door will be watch me but watch me. but watch not only me Watch my community. Watch my to do a. Community. I'm getting ready to go get three more individuals whom will be willing to do exactly what it is that I'm doing and we're gonna literally show up. you know how what is it like a flash? mob? Yeah. do a flash my If we want independent, I I surely was what would be willing to do like a flash mob like we're gonna get out here and we're gonna get this vote and we are absolutely unstoppable as a community because like Dora said, It's resilience is in our blood. That's right. A. We have a campaign I still I vote they try to deny me they try to support erase me and still I vote Y'all were ask everybody to turn up this Tuesday in Wisconsin and across the country fight for voting rights. our country. Our lives depend on it. Thank you. Dora. Thank you Shante and thank you for everybody who is watching turn up. Yeah. Thank you.
