Of ah media and ah working together before ah not so many examples but back in the sixth is that was ah a case with ah where academia and the media cooperated late around closure to us some ten years ago I was part of an experiment where ah several ah universities in UK and the guardian important newspaper in UK work together investigation ah so ah the the impact that these examples of corporation produced was I would say the main source of inspiration for ah for this model of putting together media and academics through cooperate it went with us working out what we were doing as we went along ah basically I want to say making along we were thinking about we had an earlier meeting laid out how we forefing it work but of course things were quite differently when I actually comes to reality ah When it came to the particular cases, it usually meant that the researcher would start on the ground earlier than the journalist in both cases, so the journalists were involved in the background in the background research, the widest sort of political questions with the first people to go to the two settlements what we did the research where the anthropologist sociologists in both cases, This was probably. because. Need more time by myself, I'm an anthropologist and so we just basically spend more time doing the research in the journalists on the ground, but also because in both cases there was a large distressed towards journalists for various reasons and we don't have that baggage as social scientists. So we mean that we can go that first week could spend time doing research in the village to spend time getting to know people spend time building trust and which is also very important and then once in a been established, then we can also then start to involve the journalists we can start to involve the journalist in the. In the research actually face to face with people in these settlements on the negative side, there were problems between the the the the the pace of work have been journalist and academics because academic mistake we have the researchers in the academia in University more time to do their work and their apologies take care sometimes to publish their work while journals need the investigation, they need to finish it as soon as possible and and make their findings public available to the public to the researchers. To spend a lot more time data I am working through it ah and the journalist who much more like okay there is some feedback need to get to let's get there while this even could be felt right down into interview so when we did an interview together myself and we I noticed you know I started asking some questions and she continued this how many we do before and this the different Of doing interviews, it's very well so for apologies, we don't want to put too much research bias research a bias in in in in any situation or we don't necessarily want to lead people in a certain direction and this is this is not what I'm saying generally, but so we were sort of ask around the question and allow the person to sort of. slowly unfold their ideas in conversation with us and then we will slowly circle back to certain ideas and so on. But with the journalist that was more like okay, this is the thing we need to find out. let's find out boom. Boom. Boom Boom Boom boom, So those are even a different different tempo within the interview itself, So it's sort of different these different tempos. We're taking place in in the interviews they were taking place in the wider idea of of how long we would spend doing the research and there's a sort of wider time frames and then even when it comes to book came to publishing as well. So this was both something. Attention and then and difficulty to try and to try and match these two different time frames. At the same time, I think it was actually the best thing that came out of the end. It was beneficial for both of us to constantly be questioning our practices. There were also no problems but a lack of coordination between the researchers and general when it comes to the way they look at the ethics. This is different for the two groups. We met them very often when we were actually doing the. Together the way we were having the discussions was that you know we were we as a social scientists were often thinking about. I guess like social structures and these sorts of questions. Why is the journalist and but not really thinking already about the final output but from the minute, the journalist was there with their feet on the ground and the settlement they were thinking about what the final output would be. and so this was attention but I think a very healthy tension if we went back and forth between each other asking. We're getting stuff and then changing as we went on the more positive side, I think it's extremely but the biggest take away was that working putting together generally and searches to cooperate leads to more in depth improved stories because researchers have the time to provide a lot of material to generate at the same time they they can lead to a number of of a performance in which the content is delivered because the work of officer. Also have journalist ah and at the same time ah they generalist have access to sources and information they wouldn't have access without researchers because in some countries in some cases people and institutions stand to ah speak more freely with the researchers if they know that this results are for science I think ah in fact ah these days with ah going through a lot of crisis but ah including the most important crisis which is the financial crisis ah also the time ah when journalism is suffering a lot because of the pandamic that is leading to losses of jobs and ah new financial crisis in the field ah but at the same time because being attacked more and more by popular by governments because it's a space of free thinking ah I think that too is the two feels ah have a lot to share ah and ah I I think in fact this is One of the key models of that that will help both the general and in the future, so I think people in both fields should seriously think about that but for that to work, it needs a lot of things. first of all it needs scale our modest experiment. We also all the problems more universities more media outlets should be embark on this model. It needs more articulation and it's more consistency so it has to be done in a more let's let's say institutionalized way. With both parties is being very serious about sharing resources and time to to lead to this results well, it certainly doesn't produce material as fast as other forms of journalism might, but I think what you get is a much richer. deeper and more varied output because of that and this is really gonna in a pilot set. There's only a few of us working in the project if it was up to a bigger level or a bigger teams of people working on a certain story and and we worked out more precisely. stages along. Which we couldn't really do cuz we're working on how this would work from the very beginning. then I couldn't imagine this could be a model that could be implemented in many different settings on many different types of stories.
