You are warmly invited to the launch of ‘The Silent Book’ by Bernadette T Wallis

An engrossing story, both deeply personal and historical, of the disappearing Australian-Irish sign language told through the experience of Bernadette’s own Deaf family.

“A hearing child of parents who were both profoundly deaf, Sr Wallis has written an insightful history of her parents’ childhood, education and family life, and then broadened her story to record the history of Catholic Deaf edu...cation.

Over her 300 pages, we meet many heroes and heroines, and many of them are Catholic priests, nuns and brothers – quite a few of them Irish – and the wonder, to this reader, is that none of them have been canonised for the great work they did for the deaf community.”

I'm Orla, I work for the Advocacy Service and I'm here to talk about bowel cancer.
There's been some new information on the radio the National Bowel Screening Programme. They are encouraging people from age 60 to 69 to register your details online at (
If you register online from today, they will contact you by letter within the next two years. The letter will ask you to phone them if you want a Home Test Kit, so you can do the test yourself at home.

They will need your date of birth, contact details, second name etc and then they will post a kit to your home.
When you receive the kit, you go to the toilet and make a bowel movement (poo). There is a little stick in the kit. Dip the stick into your poo, then put the stick in the bag. Post it back to the screening programme by free post, then wait for the results.
It is for people aged 60-69. There is no need to be embarrassed, it's a simple visit to the toilet. Just one small job, then it's done and it could save your life.
You have to wait up to 2 years for the Screening Programme, but if you are worried or feel discomfort in your bowels, it's better to go to your doctor now just to be on the safe side.
If you are under 60 and over 69, you should go to the doctor yourself if you feel there is something wrong, just to be safe.

About the letter:
The letter asks you to phone to request a Home Test Kit. Our administrator, Alison, rang the National Screening Programme today to ask about options for the Deaf community.
They said you cannot email or fax, only phone calls. They will accept a third party, like the IDS's Advocacy Service, calling on your behalf.
If you receive the letter asking you to phone, you can come here to the advocacy service, or, contact us through Skype (deaforward04).
IDS will call for you and of course, it is always confidential.
