Volgograd (then known as Stalingrad) was completely rebuilt after the war as a showpiece of Soviet architecture and town planning. Therefore it is no surprise that Lenin is still visible all over the city. The main statue is unsurprisingly located on Ploschad Lenina (Lenin Square) and the 18-metre statue depicts a rather dramatic Lenin, in front of a semicircular colonnade and a nice Soviet bar-relief.

A more quirky Lenin statue can be found inside the main post office on U...litsa Mira, yes actually inside! Vladimir Ilych has been installed in the centre of the hall on top of shelving to oversee the work of the post office staff.

Last but not least, Volgograd is also home to the world’s largest Lenin statue. It is located around 30km from the centre of the city (Volgograd is one of the world’s longest cities!) in the Krasnoarmeysky District, overlooking the start of the Volga-Don Canal. The 27-metre sculpture on a 30-metre pedestal was unveiled in 1973 and is the work of Yevgeny Vuchetich, the same sculptor responsible for the Mother Russia Calls statue.

Previously it was Stalin who stood here (also the work of Vuchetich) but this was demolished over one night in 1961 shortly after Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd.

With a population of over one million, Krasnoyarsk is Russia’s 12th biggest city and the third biggest in Siberia. The city markets itself as the capital of Yenisey Siberia due to its location on the mighty Yenisey river in central Siberia. Cossacks sailed down the Yenisey from the older settlement of Yeniseysk and founded a fort in 1628 where Krasnoyarsk stands today to better protect their new territories from native Siberian peoples. The Yenisey is indeed one of the city’s... best features, along with its mix of modern, Soviet and 19th century architecture.

⠀⠀The city also has some interesting museums, including a steamship-museum, an estate-museum of the painter Vasily Surikov, who was born in Krasnoyarsk, and a Soviet era Lenin Museum which has been turned into a modern art museum - the Lenin exhibitions are still there alongside the art installations, something that would have been sacrilegious during the Soviet period!

⠀⠀However if you are in Krasnoyarsk the absolute must-see sight is the wonderful Stolby Nature Reserve just outside the city. Stolby is Russian for rock pillars as this forest area is famous for the giant rock pillars that are dotted all over the reserve. Many are named after what they are said to look like, such as Feathers, Little Elephant and Grandfather and Grandmother.
