I stumbled on this place before the doors had opened for the day and made a point of going back for lunch.

I had the oven baked SA Flathead, with the chips and salad combo deal, and a soft drink, din...e in.

Obviously a little more expensive than your local greasy spoon, but about the same as a mid-priced cafè/restaurant, which is fair enough as the food was at least of that standard.

The fish was moist, delicate, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The chips were good and the salad was bright, tasty and the ingredients were super fresh.

Service was prompt, attentive and engaging.

The decor and design (menu board and menus) were crisp.

The menu isn't expansive, but as their cross O'Connell St peers Burgastronomy made plain when they opened it's better to do a few things well than a lot poorly. I hope Drinken Sailor ard similarly successful.

Overall a terrific experience, one I will repeat many times I'm sure - and be able to make use of the loyalty card.

Only one gripe.
No King George Whiting on the menu. I know it's expensive, but this is South Australia - you've got to have King George Whiting. That beautiful delicate sweet white flesh, there's nothing better. Maybe offer it as a 'special' once in awhile, promoted on social media.

Came in with my daughter for the first time. We shared the Gobbledock burger which was fantastic. The wood oven makes a big difference from deep fried fish burgers at other joints and of course a lo...t healthier. Big thankyou to Clint and Michael for their hospitality See More

After writing my first review, which can be read below, my partner and I decided to give the Drunken Sailor another try. We were hoping our negative experience had been a troke of bad luck as all of t...he other reviews are so positive. So we went there for dinner again last night. Our experience yesterday confirmed that on our first visit we did have bad luck, for whatever reason.
This time the chips were perfect! I had the crabcakes, which were moist and tasty. My husband had the catch of the day, battered and cooked well. The portions were more than good-sized. This time we were served a share plate of chips and a share plate of salad, something we did not get on our first visit. We noticed yesterday that share plates were served to everyone ordering for more than one person and guessed that this must be the standard. So this time we actually got more food than on our first visit. The service was excellent, and even though it was quite busy, our food did not take long in arriving. Because it was busy, it was quite noisy inside, but there were tables free outside and that suited us fine. This was a much better experience and we will certainly be returning to try different items on the menu.

My partner and I went here for dinner. The music inside was so loud that it was hard to understand and be understood by the staff behind the counter. This also forced us to sit outside, but luckily it was a nice evening. My partner had the salmon and I had the battered flathead, which we both upgraded to a meal. The salmon was well cooked but very small. The batter on the flathead had gone a bit soggy on the underside just from sitting on the plate and could have been any type of white fish. I've had better battered fish from the supermarket. The fries were undercooked; pale and limp but still firm, certainly not the best in the world as they claim on their menu. We both had the mediteranean salad, which could have been fresher. Lettuce was on the limp side and the tomatoes were tasteless and mushy. We were told when placing our order that catch of the day fish wasn't available because the chef didn't like the quality of the fish provided. Maybe such attention should go to all aspects of the meal. No value for money and a very disappointing dining experience. We won't be going back.

The fish curry was so yummy. Not your average fish&chips that's for sure!! This venue is just what Adelaide needed.
