“As a community we all have a role to play and ultimately as citizens we have a role to play in confronting stigma,” said Mayor Don Iveson, addressing the audience.

It’s important to start now with young people to prevent a cycle of poverty and mental illness, the mayor said.

While social media can combat social isolation, it can also provide opportunities for anonymous cyber-bullying.

Tonight was an excellent success with discussion surrounding youth mental health at the YEGYouth Mental Health Panel Discussion. Many thanks to our remarkable p...anelists, Thomas Holmes, Linh Lu, Rebeccah Marsh, Margo Jackson, Tracy Johnson, Gina Chan and our moderator, Glynnis Lieb.

Thanks to Mayor Don Iveson for opening remarks for highlighting the importance of youth mental health tonight. Thank you to City Councillors, Andrew Knack and Scott McKeen for attending the discussion and for their continuous support.

Thank you to the Shadow Minister of Health, Drew Barnes for his speech and Minister Denise Wollard for her attendance.

The City of Edmonton Youth Council believes that mental health is an important issue that affects Edmontonian youth. Through this diverse panel discussion between youth mental health experts, the extent to which this issue is pertinent to the City of Edmonton, on both the community level and governance level was explored. We hope to identify any important influences, both positive and negative, on youth mental wellbeing; examples may be the influence of any school-provided supports, the influence of poverty, the role of the health care system, or how any programs offered in Edmonton may influence this issue. The discussion was recorded and will be posted as a free online resource. The Health and Wellness sub committee will take key points from the discussion to create a report to City Council that will outline the issue and, if appropriate, recommend any courses of action that the City of Edmonton may consider taking to address the issue. It is our hope that this discussion has provided the community with insight into how the City of Edmonton can better address the issue of youth mental health, and where services and barriers to support exist for youth in Edmonton. Ultimately, our mission is to narrow our focus to key areas of support for youth mental well-being, to educate the City of Edmonton on the issue of youth mental wellbeing, and to report any important findings or recommendations regarding this issue to Edmonton’s City Council.

Most importantly, thanks to my wonderful co-MC, Angelika Matson, along with our wonderful team Alex MacRae-Korobkov, David Ryan Scott and Davina Kam for all your hard work!

For those of you who were unable to make it tonight or did not have a chance to ask your question, feel free to comment below or send the City of Edmonton Youth Council a direct message. We will be sure to forward these questions along to our panelists.

Discussion surrounded five questions tonight:
How does youth mental illness relate to poverty?
What do you think has contributed to a perceived spikes in mental illness in youth?
What is a barrier for youth to access mental health services in Edmonton?
In your experience, where do you perceive youth to be falling through the gaps of the current health service system?
What changes would you like to see made for youth struggling with mental health in Edmonton?

Also, be sure to check out mental health stories on the Project Pilgrim page!

Hey everyone! Please take the time out of your day to hear me out within this (admittedly massive) post, I truly believe this is an amazing opportunity for e...very youth reading this to make tangible change happen in our city.

I humbly request your voice as a member of Edmonton's youth community (ages 13-23) in support the implementation of the EndPoverty Edmonton Strategy. We ask for less than a minute of your time today to lead the way as an Edmontonian youth towards ending poverty in our city within a generation. By contributing your voice in this petition (https://docs.google.com/…/1gZwyAqWZrKco2T64vRVDLX7…/viewform), you stand firmly for the elimination of racism, decriminalization of poverty, livable incomes for all, improvements and expansion of transit services, funding for affordable and supportive housing, improved access to mental health services and addiction supports, as well as numerous other crucial aspects of poverty which affect all Edmontonians.

This means growing a healthy community for everyone in this city, where post-secondary education and economic/social prosperity won't be restricted to those fortunate enough to participate, and enabling those currently trapped working multiple jobs and still not breaking through the poverty-line to become fully realized in their ambitions and talents, providing a phenomenal outcome for us as Edmontonians, and as human beings.

As a follow-up to our event in early March, Ticket to Ride, our team in the City of Edmonton Youth Council is contributing directly with EndPoverty Edmonton as youth advocates for their 28 point strategy, aiming to end poverty in our city within a generation. Their initial concept was unanimously approved by City Council on December 15th 2015, though in order to concrete and implement these concepts into policy to truly change the lives of those living in poverty, we need your voices to demonstrate a concise demand for this form of change.

Please give this a quick share if you feel so inclined, it would mean a bunch!

TL;DR : If you're between the ages of 13-23 in Edmonton, help EndPoverty Edmonton make our city prosperous by simply signing the petition to show youth demand and interest in their strategy.
