If there is a way to screw something up with mid-drive DIY ebikes, you gotta believe at some point I've done it. The newest addition to the long list of stuff that I've broken is the chainstay on my SnowShoe 2XL 5.05" tired Phat Phuk build which has long been my favorite snow bike. When mounting the BBSxx with intrusive chainstays I'm often just too darn lazy and I don't take the time to space out the drive unit away from the… [ 919 more words ]

I've been meaning to try a 1x11 groupset for a while now but I've just been too cheap to spend my own money on one only to have it fail on me. Although you can throw a mega granny like the Sunrace 42T granny on a 10-speed setup, inevitably you always end up having issues with either your highest or your lowest gears. [ 1,209 more word ]

When I was a child I was completely obsessed with Lego. I spent most of my free waking hours in my youth sitting on the floor for hours at a time building anything I could imagine. I distinctly remember one of my creations was an AWD motorcycle with a complex drive system that engaged the front and rear wheels together so that they would spin at the same rate while the fork still swung back and forth. Eric from Lunacycle has a great scam going. He sends me new products for testing on his dime, I beat on them for a few months then eventually fall in love with whatever he sends me and end up buying it. I was skeptical about how I would feel about the new Wolfpack he had been designing for many months, but after 3 months of hard abuse, this frame pack has taken everything I've thrown at it without breaking a sweat. This is officially my 16th documented ebike build on this site. Sweet sixteen turned out to exceed my every expectation for performance and usability even though I threw my beloved new Ultra Max 2500W peak ludicrous drive unit on a crappy old Bikes Direct Sniper full suspension fat bike that I couldn't give a rat's ass about. I wanted to build a trail bike that I would care about if it fell apart and that I could ride without having to constantly lean on the throttle. [ 1,427 more word ]

I've been looking at aftermarket screw-in studs for fatbike and motocross tires for a while now since I love to ride all winter long and a lot of times the snow is just a mixture of ice and slush. The premier US seller of studs is a company called gripstuds who sell a variety of custom spike sizes made in Italy out of carbide steel for about $1 each. [ 814 more words ]

One of my pet peeves about the new torque-sensing 1000W Ultra Max drive unit is that there just aren't that many frames for it available in the states. The original Bafang Max drive which only sported 350W of power has a totally different mounting bracket than the Ultra Max which means you just can't fit around drive unit into a square hole. It's been a while since I've done any tire reviews, but the last 3 weeks on a 4.8 folding bead 120 TPI Snowshoe XL studded tire impressed me enough to spend some time writing a review. I bought this tire last spring for $99 and it is available in a variety of places online as well as ebay, just make sure you get the 120 TPI version and not one that has a wire bead. On my latest trip to LA to visit Lunacycle and test the Apex and Apollo ebikes I found a new and unexpected love. the latest version of the Luna Apocalypse scooter. I guess the old 52v 35mph 2WD Luna Scooter was not radical enough so Eric decided to sell a bunch of higher power scooters with upgraded hub motors and suspension. [ 1,135 more word ]

2017 was a great year for ebikes. Customers demand that bikes just keep getting cheaper, more customizable and more powerful. It really has never been a better time to get into ebikes than right now, as you can buy so much more ebike than you could a year or two ago for the same price or less. I gotta say that for so many reasons 2017 was the hardest year I've ever been forced to stomach, I can't imagine any way that 2018 can't be better. [ 1,999 more word ]

When it comes to dirt bikes I have to admit, I'm not a fan. When I was in my early teens we used to go out and jump a tiny 100cc bike off a giant pile of dirt in my friend's backyard (both of his parents were state troopers). The bike was a two-stroke monster that was loud and obnoxious and you had to rebuild the carb on it every 50 hours or so of riding. [ 2,031 more words ]

When it comes to riding my bike on any road, it takes a lot to get me excited. There is an exception to every rule and my exception to my disdain for road biking involves the Blue Ridge Parkway \ Skyline Drive in Virgina. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs for 469 miles through Virgina and North Carolina while Skyline Drive is a 105-mile section of it that runs from one end of Shenandoah Park to the other. When I go to the Lunacycle factory I make it a point to ride every ebike I can get my hands on (including one that they were probably building just for you). That's right, I got my grubby potato chip fingers all over your ebike and rode it up a bunch of stairs and jumped some curbs before that bike was shipped to you. [ 1,280 more word ]

Fraud /frôd/: noun : wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. Over the past decade, I've seen a disturbing trend as more and more companies seem to be blatantly trying to rip off consumers, investors, and crowdfunders with their electric vehicle products. Whether it is electric cars, ebikes, electric scooters or electric skateboards it seems like the entire industry has become like the gold rush of clueless people anxious to spend their money to get their little piece of the electrically powered pie. Ever since I started getting into ebikes I've wanted to build a high power torque sensing ebike. The main problem is that the more power you want to put through your motor, the more sensitive the torque sensing system needs to be. Although the ebike markets of the world are flooded with 250-350 Watt Torque sensing motors, there is nothing on the market that even comes close to comparing to the new Bafang Ultra Max drive tricked out with a Lunacycle 2500W Ludicrous controller. It's been a long time since I laughed so hard I cried.
