In 2015, I championed the Vision Zero initiative in response to increased pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries. The initiative, which was adopted by the City in 2015, aimed to reduce and ultimately eliminate traffic fatalities. The number of traffic fatalities in San Antonio was down 26% in 2017. In 2017 there were 143 fatalities, down from 193 fatalities in 2016. The information came from an analysis of TxDOT’s Crash Report Information System and SAPD data.
Fatalities from automobile crashes were down 16%, for people on motorcycles down 33%, pedestrians down 32%, and fatalities for people on bicycles had the greatest drop, down 60%. This is in contrast to Texas Department of Transportation figures that show fatalities in the state were up 10% last year.

Our city continues to mourn the loss officer Moreno, who I learned was a Lanier graduate. May his family find strength in the prayers that the community is making during this difficult time.
We offer our condolences to the family of Officer Miguel Moreno. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all the brave men and women of San Antonio Police De...partment, who risk their lives in service to protect our communities.
Nuestro más sentido pesame a la familia del agente de policia Miguel Moreno. Estamos orando por ellos y por todos los agentes de SAPD que como servidores a diario ponen sus vidas en peligro para proteger a nuestras comunidades.
Our District 5 family has grown quite a bit this summer! We are thankful to have nine summer interns serving D5 constituents at our three offices. Chasity Garci...a is an intern with the Family Service Association of San Antonio, Inc. Summer Internship Program who has been helping out at our City Hall office. Chastity's next adventure will be entering high school in the fall.
Praying for the two San Antonio Police Department officers involved in a shooting that occurred earlier today by San Antonio College. One officer is in grave co...ndition and the other officer is expected to survive. Praying also for their families going through this immensly difficult situation.
Rezando por los dos agentes de policía que hoy fueron heridos en una balacera que ha puesto a uno de ellos en condición grave. Se espera que el segundo agente sobrevivirá. Rezando también por sus familias que están pasando por momentos tan difíciles.
