In 2015, I championed the Vision Zero initiative in response to increased pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries. The initiative, which was adopted by the City in 2015, aimed to reduce and ultimately eliminate traffic fatalities. The number of traffic fatalities in San Antonio was down 26% in 2017. In 2017 there were 143 fatalities, down from 193 fatalities in 2016. The information came from an analysis of TxDOT’s Crash Report Information System and SAPD data.
Fatalities from automobile crashes were down 16%, for people on motorcycles down 33%, pedestrians down 32%, and fatalities for people on bicycles had the greatest drop, down 60%. This is in contrast to Texas Department of Transportation figures that show fatalities in the state were up 10% last year.

Our city continues to mourn the loss officer Moreno, who I learned was a Lanier graduate. May his family find strength in the prayers that the community is making during this difficult time.
