For far too long we have allowed partisanship and political tribalism to erode #civility within the halls of Congress. Happy to see members from both sides of the aisle working together to #ReviveCivility

The Trump administration and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos persist in putting private lenders ahead of American students. If the Trump administration continues to rollback protections for student borrowers, Congress must act.

Emanuel Cleaver II — US Representative for Missouri District 5
The Trump administration and Education Secretary DeVos have a duty to protect student borrowers from exploitation and predatory lending. Instead, they continue to roll back protections for students and promote policies that benefit for-profit student loan lenders.

In a markup in the Financial Services Committee last week, I spoke in favor of New York Congressman Gregory Meeks’ amendment that highlighted the importance of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The CDBG program is important for development efforts in both urban and rural communities. The more we fail to see the symbiotic relationship between urban and rural areas, the more damage we will do to this country.

Emanuel Cleaver II — US Representative for Missouri District 5
Had to see the damage myself here in Oak Grove, MO. This community is resilient.

I extend my condolences to the families who have lost the people they love. This has to stop. We must come together regardless of party to finally put an end to all of these senseless killings. It is time to make real change and I hope it starts right here in Congress.

It’s time to end gun violence now, because it is just too important to ignore. Mass shootings that claim the lives of innocent Americans should not be the norm. It is time to finally close the terror gap once and for all, by barring gun sales to persons on the FBI’s terrorist watch list.

Pleased to announce the passage of H.R. 3700, “The Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act of 2015”. As someone who grew up in public housing, I know personally the importance of having a safe, affordable home. This bill serves as an important example of bipartisan compromise.

Minddrive is a non-profit organization based in Missouri’s Fifth District. They are a remarkable group of mentors and at-risk high school students who have restored and converted a 1967 Karmann Ghia into an electric car, powered by social media. They drove their electric car to Washington, DC, to display their successful efforts and meet with various groups. Minddrive inspires students to learn, and changes their outlook on the future by focusing on sustainable life skills.

No matter which side of the aisle you sit on, today is a day to say thank you to the men and women in uniform who serve our nation. On Veterans Day, which began at the end of the Great War, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we remember all those who sacrificed to ensure our safety and sovereignty. And we thank you.

As we approach the end of a long and divisive political campaign season, one issue has received little to no attention. We have a national crisis in education. The United States, once leading the world college graduates, has now fallen to the middle of the pack. Read more at the Huffington Post, and LIKE if you think we should be working harder to solve this problem.

One of my biggest pleasures as a member of Congress to assist my constituents when they are in a time of need. That is why I was so pleased to personally meet with the Henrius family shortly after they were reunited. Cedanor Henrius’s teenage son, Luke, is currently in the care of Hospice. Cedanor had been tirelessly working to get visas for Luke’s grandparents to come from Haiti to visit. The family was finding delay after delay with paperwork, fees, and many frustrations. I am so pleased that my office was able to get involved and assist them with the visa process. And just days ago, Luke’s grandparents made it to Kansas City for a joyous reunion.

Touring the Ford Motor Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo. Last year, 3,800 employees produced 460,000 vehicles here-- over a thousand F-150s a day. The plant is now retooling the production line for the Ford Transit, while continuing to produce the Ford F-150. Ford has invested $1.1 billion in the KC area to build the stamping plant, expected to be completed in Jan. 2013, and another $500K in product development. That means about 1600 new jobs over the next four years. Photo courtesy of the UAW.

Today we thank our firefighters, not only for their courage in saving the life of the daughter of Minister Bobbie Tate, but also for their tireless, never-ending dedication to keeping our communities safe. Both the Kansas City and the Raytown Fire Departments received SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grants through the Department of Homeland Security this summer, allowing them to keep public servants on the job, doing their duty. Citizens of Missouri’s Fifth District can continue to depend on the protection they need and so richly deserve.

With the opening of KCP&L’s SmartGrid Innovation Park at 47th and Tracy, we are hoping to continue to inspire people with the great accomplishments of the nationally recognized Green Impact Zone. This is a project that puts Kansas City and our entire area in the front of the line when it comes to the energy usage revolution. As I shake my head in disappointment at the politics and dysfunction in Washington DC, I am inspired by the civility taking place each day here in Missouri’s Fifth District.

From the American Jobs Act to the Farm Bill, there are plenty of things we in Congress can do to help spur the economy and create jobs. This month, I am back home in Missouri’s Fifth District as Congress is in recess now, but I know there is more work to do, and I am more than ready to create jobs, restore confidence in our economy, and rebuild the middle-class.

Big news for Hope House, the largest domestic services agency in Missouri. Yesterday we announced a $500,000 grant which will help survivors of domestic abuse get the help they need--the help their lives depend on.

Voting is a fundamental right for all American citizens, and these restrictive voter ID laws threaten to disenfranchise large groups of civic-minded voters. As the author of legislation to expand and protect voting rights for students, I am committed to ensuring that no eligible voter is turned away from the ballot box during early voting and on Election Day. LIKE if you agree, and come by Union Station tomorrow at 10AM to hear more.
Happy Constitution Day. Today we celebrate the 225th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of cooperative statesmanship and the art of compromise.

Today, take a moment to remember and honor the thousands of innocent men, women, and children murdered by terrorists in the horrific attacks of February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001. Thank our first responders for their dedication to protecting our community. Remember the many Americans who have served and are currently serving in our nation's military—many of whom enlisted as a response to the 9/11 attacks.

While there is much more work that remains to be done, today’s employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to recover, slowly, from the worst downturn since the Great Depression. We must pursue the policies that work, leave behind the policies that don't, and come together to build an economy that works for the middle class.
Emanuel Cleaver II — US Representative for Missouri District 5
Every day is an opportunity to recognize the hard work of others. But today, on Labor Day, we owe a special debt of gratitude to those who built this country from the ground up, who spoke up for workers so their voices could be heard, and who stood up for rights we all now enjoy. Thank you for the work you do.

This morning I went grocery shopping with Alison, a local mother, student, and worker on minimum wage. It has been 3 long years since workers saw a federal minimum wage increase. Since then, nearly everything has increased but the minimum wage: the price of milk, the price at the pump, the cost of a college education. That's why I'm a cosponsor of the Fair Minimum Wage Act. Like if you think it's time to raise the minimum wage.
Teachers are truly the light for our children and for the nation. Wishing all teachers, students, and parents a safe and studious first week of school!

Speaking at the district's Staff Orientation/Convocation August 9, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver called teachers the "light" of this country.

Today is the 77th Anniversary of Social Security being signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Now,160 million workers are building toward a more secure retirement for themselves and their families through their contributions, and 55 million seniors, disabled workers, widows and children currently rely on it for economic security each month.

48 million Americans depend on Medicare. On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law – traveling to Independence, Missouri, to sign it in the presence of former President Harry Truman, who had championed the idea of Medicare. In recent years, we have successfully extended Medicare’s solvency, increased benefits and reduced prescription drug costs for our seniors.

Congressman Yoder and I had a great time talking to young people at our Congressional bootcamp event, We the People. Thanks to all who had a chance to join us.

All 114 Missouri counties have been declared disaster areas. Farmers I talk to in my district are worried not just about corn and soybeans, but water and hay supplies for their livestock. The drought is already starting to push food prices up. While farmers, ranchers, and producers suffer, Congress stalls. Like this status if you agree, we need to bring the Farm Bill to the Floor for a vote.
Emanuel Cleaver II — US Representative for Missouri District 5
Crops are dying, the soil is drying and stock water supplies are declining. June was one of the driest summer months in Missouri’s history, with nearly all counties in Missouri affected by this drought, including my district. Today I sponsored and sent a bipartisan letter to Secretary Vilsack, signed by all members of the Missouri delegation, calling for disaster assistance. I will continue to monitor these conditions, push for the disaster designations, and work to make sure emergency aid is available to get farmers, ranchers and producers the help they need and deserve.
