In the run up to publication day let me tell you a little about ABSENT:
"A child’s body is discovered in the bottom of a bag, kicking off a major investigation for Salford Precinct’s murder squad. Soon the National Crime Agency roll into town and DS Kevin Coupland is under strict instructions to play nice.
He’s got enough on his plate to worry about politics. A shock discovery in his personal life is starting to take its toll, causing him to make decisions that bring him to t...he attention of the powers that be for all the wrong reasons."
-This is some of the blurb on the back of the cover, those of you who are up to date with the series will know what's about to knock him off his axis - No spoilers here though. As the series has developed, more of Coupland's background becomes clear - a complex childhood which makes him crave - and cherish - the simple things in life. He is steadfast and loyal, though he often goes about things like a hefty bull in an antique china shop. In ABSENT he is challenged to his very core - he must tread carefully, or risk hurting those he loves the most.
ABSENT explores how someone can go missing without anyone noticing. It is also about loss in its many forms, and forgiveness and hope.
Available 19 May.
I was asked in an interview this morning if I remember the first book I had read, (obviously apart from school reading books). Funnily enough I still have it. Aesop's Fables, published by Ladybird in 1974. I absolutely loved it. It got me to thinking of other reading moments, winning a book token when I was seven and being taken to the local bookshop (a long bus ride away) and the joy I had selecting The Chronicles of Narnia, The Water Babies, and the Cat in the Hat. Later, for my 10 th birthday, my aunt giving me a collection of books by Charles Dickens. Books are a wonderful gift. Often overlooked when compared to computer games and other cool toys available for children these days but still essential to their learning and development. If you love reading you are never bored, are you?
Really love what Aimee Coveney from Bookollective has done with A PLACE OF SAFETY. In the run up to ABSENT being published she is redesigning my backlist and I love the colour schemes she's using. Thanks Aimee!
So now the official lead up to ABSENT's publication begins.
I was so impressed with Aimee Coveney at Bookollective 's design for the fourth in my DS Coupland series I've asked her to redesign my backlist to fit in with the new design style. Here's Fragile Cord's new cover. Brighter covers seem to be popular these days and its sensible to update covers every once in a while. Hope you like it.
To the dog walkers at Yellowcraig last week who looked on bemused as I changed into various items of outer clothing on the beach, there was a method to my madness. I was having great fun being coaxed to relax and smile by the lovely Emma Martin Photography for some publicity photos in the lead up to ABSENT being published next month. I hope you like the results.
And so the countdown begins. One month until ABSENT is released...
