“We live in a very small community and as such everyone knows what happened to my daughter. And because of this, she will never get married. Which man will want her now?"

There are currently over one million refugees from South Sudan living in settlements in Uganda. Sexual abuse is rife in the camps, but is seldom ever reported.

- Cases that involve refugees and locals are the most reported. Rarely are those concerning either just locals or refugees....
- At lease one defilement or rape case is reported each day.
- Cases of sexual abuse are often settled by forcing the two people involved to get married, or by monetary compensation from the perpetrator’s family to the victim’s.

A male survivor of sexual violence during the Bosnian conflict eloquently summarized the frustrations that he, and many like him, continue to face a quarter of a century since the start of the war. He said: “During the war, we were victims of the crimes and the criminals; today, we are victims of society and the system”. Too many survivors have had to wait years – even decades – for their proverbial “day in court”.

Today, on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide, we would like to take a moment to remember the victims and survivors alike of this terrible period in our world’s history. During the 1994 genocide, 800,000 people were killed and between 100,000 and 250,000 women were raped in the space of 3 months. With so many conflicts still raging across the world, we must never forget Rwanda.

According to UNFPA, more than 3 million Yemeni women and girls are at risk of gender-based violence, and 60,000 women are at risk of sexual violence, including rape. Many cases of gender-based violence remain unreported, adding to an incomplete picture of the scale of violence against women.

"Preventing and addressing sexual violence is one of the great moral challenges of our time. We need to expand the circle of allies, stakeholders and champions, and sustain the political momentum generated in recent years to propel real change at the community-level. Sexual violence is not a “private” burden to be borne by the victims; it is a social problem requiring a sustained response. Rape is still the only crime that casts a long shadow of social disgrace upon the victim, rather than the victimizer. We must reverse and redirect this stigma, to send a clear signal that the only shame of rape is in committing, commanding or condoning it." Health workers in conflict zones play a critical role in addressing SGBV, not just in the way that they treat their patients medically, but also in their ability to connect survivors to counselling and legal services.

Every month, about 10,000 migrants enter #Yemen. Usually, their hope is to reach Gulf countries but they often become targets in the conflict and only rarely they reach their destinations. After being tricked by traffickers, the migrants are stuck in Yemen, where they face different dangers: from death due to hunger and dehydration during the journey to exploitation and kidnapping, forced labor, sexual violence, torture and threats.

#Bangladesh: Sexual violence is a medical emergency, requiring treatment within an urgent window of time to prevent an unwanted pregnancy or possible infections such as HIV. Too often, the window for prevention is closed by the time care is sought.

Sexual violence can be opportunistic or organized. It can be a reason to flee, but also can be experienced along the journey at any stage of displacement.

South Sudan: the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2406 (2018) renewing the United Nations Mission in South Sudan mandate until 15 March 2019, demanding that parties end the fighting and signalling its intention to consider all measures, including an arms embargo, against those obstructing peace in the war-torn nation.
The Security Council also expressed grave concern at the findings of UN Against Sexual Violence in Conflict of the systematic and widespread use of sexual violence as a tactic by parties to the conflict against the civilian population, particularly against women and girls.
