Under the Fair Trade system, low-income farmers
and artisans in developing countries form alliances
with importers and marketers in Western Europe and...
North America. Participants must agree to certain basic
principles:
• Producers must receive a stable minimum price for
their products
• Forced or child labor will not be used.
• Production methods must be environmentally
friendly.
When these standards are met, international certifi cation
bodies allow the products to carry a Fair Trade
logo, such as the well-known label borne by some
coffee imported into the United States.

I discovered delicious Alter Eco chocolate bars! Their cacao is fair trade certified co-op grown; their cacao beans are sent to Swiss chocolatiers to create delicious chocolate bars; which are then di...stributed through SF! A side note, these particular cacao growers gave up their coca crops for cacao and actually became more prosperous; as well they plant trees sustainably! Their site is http://www.alterecofoods.com/ ♥ See More

Your Valentine's Day chocolate just got a little sweeter. For every metric ton of #FairTradeCertified cocoa sold, farmers earn an additional $200 to invest in critical community projects. That means when you choose #FairTrade chocolate for your Valentine, you're helping cocoa farmers break the cycle of poverty, combat child labor, and improve educational opportunities for their children. It's the ultimate expression of love.

Did you know that #FairTradeCertified pineapples (okay, all pineapples) grow on plants rather than trees? The plant consists of long, sword-like leaves arrayed around a thick central stem. There, dozens of tiny flowers blossom and fuse to form the tropical fruit we know and love. The whole process takes two to three years... and yields exactly one pineapple.

We'll savor those little golden chunks even more from now on.
