Pro Tip #2: Tire Pressure
One of the easiest ways to improve your car's gas mileage is to properly inflate your tires.
How am I supposed to know what pressure my tires are supposed to be at???
...You aren’t, but the answer is conveniently located on your driver’s side doorjamb. Just open up your drivers door, look down and to the right and you should see this little plate (photo 1). It has all the information you need. Stop by your local gas station and they should have a quarter-operated air pump (photo 2) that you can use to fill your tires up to the right PSI.
The plate specifies “Cold Tire Pressure”, which can be a little confusing. Pressure changes with temperature, so you want to make sure your tires are cold before inflating them to get an accurate reading. Feel the tire with your hand and if it is warm/hot, let it cool off a little before inflating your tires.

Pro Tip #1: The Penny Test
The Penny Test is an easy way to tell if you need new tires. Most of us have a cupholder full of change in our car, so grab one of those pennies and stick it in one of the tread blocks of your tire. Make sure Mr. Lincoln's head is pointing down (see picture). If you can see the top of his head, you need new tires! The tire in the picture needs to be replaced.
Why does the tread on my tires matter?...
The tread grooves on your tire are used to channel water away from the interface of the tire and the road. If these grooves get too small, the tire cannot move all of the water out of the way and will cause your car to hydroplane and lose control in wet weather.
