According to UNESCO, the youth literacy rate in Kenya is approximately 86%. On Wednesday afternoons, all FKLA students participate in reading class. They alternate between #fiction and #nonfiction and focus on material that is unrelated to their current classwork. They are asked to highlight vocabulary whose meaning they are unsure of and, once explained, they are encouraged to use at least three new words in their follow-up compositions. Here are Keziah and Grace (Class Five) reading a Rainbow Magic story.

Meet Zipporah or “Zippy” as she is referred to on campus. She started with Flying Kites on October 2, 2013. She began as a laundress, transitioned to Dorm Parent and now serves as FKLA Admissions Support. When you enter the school block, her smiling face is the first that you will see. She is from Njabini and has three kids — two boys and one girl. In her free time, she enjoys working with youth and Googling whatever comes to mind. She loves seafood, her favorite toenail polish color is purple and a favorite recent memory is the 10th anniversary party. “That day,” she said, “I lost at least several kgs playing with the kids.”
