I'm still undecided, so every time I get into a cab, I ask the driver who he's voting for. Today this dude SHOCKED me with his answer -- so impressive! I needed to ask him to start over so I I could tape it. Regardless of who you're voting for, vote as part of THE THINKING CLASS. Remember that these five candidates are campaigning to have power over us all, so ask the right questions and have sen...sible, coherent reasons for casting your vote. My new friend Virgilio ended by saying, "if Duterte or Poe win, I won't condemn them just because they're not my candidate. Whoever wins will be the President of the Philippines and no matter what I will always support my president." Now that's what it means to be a Filipino citizen. One Friday afternoon, I asked a taxi driver named Virgilio who he's voting for and posted the video on Facebook. Virgilio's answer was so well-informed, charming and disarming that two days later, the vid hit over a hundred thousand views, 2,000 likes and (the crazy metric) 1,800 shares. The post wasn't boosted or sponsored. It went viral because of extreme rarity, issue relevance, and Virgilio's accidental magic.
Along with the overwhelming positive feedback came a loud demand for more. So here it is.
But before that, just a few things to keep in mind:
1. I won't lie to you
- None of these videos are meant to endorse any candidate whatsoever. For the most part, we'll try to keep these as objective and neutral as we can.
- Many times I won't share the same opinion as the drivers and neither will you, but that's okay.
- Keep in mind that quite often politics (and the ulterior motives that come with it) blur the truth in Manila and all over the country. On certain days you can taste and feel the bullshit in the air. These videos are meant to filter through the lies, show you what's really going on, and bring to light what people like your everyday cab drivers are thinking in a simple, fun and entertaining way.
2. Don't expect another Virgilio
- Anywhere I am in the world, I absolutely love having conversations with strangers -- I'm obsessed with it, in fact -- yet I've never met a guy like him in my life. We don't expect to get the same numbers for these subsequent videos but we'll fairly and accurately edit the other drivers in the hopes of keeping them as interesting for you.
3. Debate on my threads is totally welcome
- But do your best to be decent. The spirit of these interviews is awareness, discourse and finding common ground. Not hate.
- If you communicate properly and logically, I'll do my best to respond. If I don't respond, don't worry, pretty sure someone else will.
- If you direct attacks at me or anyone in this little community we've created, I can't even begin to elaborate the immensity of the fuck I don't give. 😊 Passion is fine -- and, in fact, highly encouraged -- but keep in mind that there's nothing more useless than uncontained, illogical Internet anger. You'll never get your point across that way and blocking you becomes so attractive.
4. If I say or write anything wrong, please call me out on it
- Upon fact checking I'll be more than happy to correct myself.
- The main goal of these things is to be informative and that won't happen if the bricks that form our foundation aren't solidly layered on top of each other.
5. Don't hate on the driver -- what's the point? If you wanna hate on anything, hate on my hair.
