Sensible suggestions here for consideration this evening by the group responsible for making decisions around the development of a new skatepark for the island. We're fully behind building an incredible skatepark for Jersey. Rather than being something hidden away or delegated through too many levels and compromised in its design, a skatepark should be beautiful and valued by the whole community. Here's hoping that the states engage the sort of park developer that can build a truly appealing facility and that it is guided by the needs of all those that choose to roll on wheels; skaters, BMXers and scooter riders alike. Fingers crossed.
Steve Pallett has said PMR’s role is these 3 things:
1 - “Identify the views of all interested parties.” (This means, find out what the skaters and BMX’s specif...ically want.)
As a skater, will it be easier, faster and more productive to have a conversation about skatepark specifics with a skater… or with someone who has never skated?
Now lets add the complexities of keeping the BMX riders happy. Could a non-skater possibly envision and guide you into the correct way to do this?
Could a non-skater stoke you out, steer the conversation, speak your language, understand you better than you understand yourself, show you images of other parks, inspire you to a vision even better than the one in your head? Or… will something get lost in translation?
2 - “Evaluate potential sites.”
If you had never personally built a skatepark, would you feel qualified to look at a site, and make a decision about complexities such as drainage, wind factors, land quality, build-ability.
Would you know which unseen/unknown issues affect a skatepark, or would you need years of skating/building experience to have feel for this?
Do PMR do site risk assessments to determine best site and positioning within the site for the proposed skatepark, topographical survey/CAT scan & Utilities Searches and desktop geotechnical surveys?
Or will they have to bring a skatepark build company to do this, once they’ve looked at the site and decided if they think it’s a possibility or not.
Maverick do all this - no waiting around, no bringing experts and making it more complex than it needs to be.
We don’t want to have to do things twice!
3 - “Investigate what the funding options might be.”
Do you think a company from Scotland (no Jersey experience) would know who to speak to about potential sources of cash that could make our skatepark better or do you think maybe this small part should be carried out by a local freelancer who knows the island? Or maybe this is the bit that PMR could be good at. But leave the rest to a qualified company please!
Coming to entertain the humans of Jersey in September is this vocal powerhouse! We love supporting our local music festival and the acts they manage to secure for islanders. A lot of people missed getting to see him last year due to fog. Thankfully you should be OK for the drive to Trinity!! Get yourself a ticket!
Calling all Weekenders!
We are absolutely ecstatic to announce the first artist for this years festival. One of the hottest acts in the world as we speak, we a...re stoked, on the day of the BRITS 2018 awards ceremony, to announce Rory Graham, aka ‘RAG ’N’ BONE MAN’ as our first huge act for WEEKENDER 2018!
In 2017, Rag’N’Bone Man bagged two BRIT Awards – becoming the very first BRITs ‘Critics’ Choice Award’ winner to win ‘Best British Breakthrough Act’ in the same year. He also has the accolade ‘biggest selling debut album for a male artist’ in over a decade, surpassing artists such as Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith.
Having released his debut album Human in February 2017 to worldwide critical acclaim, Rory’s breakthrough release spent 2 consecutive weeks at the number 1 spot in the UK charts. The album has now sold more than a million copies in the UK to date, with the title single, Human, also selling more than a million copies.
Rag’N’Bone Man credits the success of his debut album solely to his diverse fanbase. “People actually buy my records,” he said. “I’ve seen at gigs that my audience is made up of kids, who are like 12/13/14, to people my mum's age - it's everybody - and I think that's part of the reason why it's been successful, it's not just one group of people. It's wicked to see a whole family come to your gig."
If you made it to Glastonbury last year you’ll know that the Rag’N’Bone Man show was one of the biggest attended and his performance at Weekender 2018 is set to be hugely anticipated as Jersey’s Weekender festival grows to be bigger and better for only its second year. Other announcements will be made over the coming weeks but now that the first cat, or human, is out of the bag, limited tickets are on sale now with Super Saver pricing still available.
