A new line of research points to the conclusion that not all screens are created equal: the brain gives special attention to smartphones because they are tools we hold in our hands, vs. screens that our bodies do not physically touch.

If the smartphone truly engages attention differently, designers must treat their work with greater respect for the users’ wellbeing.

The tycoons of social media have to admit they’re just tobacco farmers in t-shirts, selling an addictive product to children. #BrainHacking

Hey friends! Our Kickstarter campaign has come to a close and although we did not hit our goal, we have learned a ton in the process.

What's next? The journey continues. After taking in the market realities and putting our heads together, we have figured out a way to create a more human phone that doesn’t require us to build a completely new one. We are now excited to announce the Siempo Phone App which will be released for testing shortly!

Have you noticed the negative correlation between happiness and time spent on apps?

“It’s amazing and scary how much power app designers have to influence your mood and how much you use their product,” Moment founder and iOS developer Kevin Holesh tells Thrive Global.

"When you realize that everything inside Facebook or YouTube is designed to capture as much of your attention as possible, it’s easier to resist their pull. Seeing that “can help you use these social media apps... consciously rather than mindlessly.”

"Your phone may not love you as much as you love your phone. And your phone has another agenda. And I think that's important to keep in mind. I'll go on Instagram and you just find yourself scrolling through these pictures, sometimes of people you don't even know, and suddenly you wake up 30minutes later and you're like 'what have I been doing?'

I feel good about it because it's got a little brain response, a little dopamine, but really is that really going to make your life ...better?

It actually isn't. and in fact it's going to leave you just wanting more. And that's not a good thing."

Kudos to 60 Minutes and Anderson Cooper 360 for drawing the public's attention to something worth paying their attention to! It's important that people understand why they feel so attached to their phones and apps, so they can make better decisions about technology usage throughout their daily lives.

Tune in this Sunday at 7pm EST to learn more about the habit design and brain science behind this problem.

One of the most frequently asked questions we hear is:

"why aren’t you making an app / a launcher / software instead?"

It’s a good question, one that we’ve been exploring from the beginning. Building a whole new device–let alone a smartphone–sounds bonkers when one could just write some code, see what people think about it, and iterate until they are happy. Here’s our thought process on why the hardware route makes sense for Siempo's mission:

How can we live a life of intention in a sea of distraction?

The same technologies that fluster the distracted mind can also bring about better mental and emotional health. Siempo is grounded in neuroscience and behavior design to balance the power of technology with how it can enrich our lives.
