11 years i keep coming back to the greenhouse backpackers - the location is great 3-4 mins walk to flinders station and an easy 11 mins walk down to the tennis - the team working here is fantastic fro...m the time you get out of the lift on the 6th floor to check in to the on going help - my room clean and tidy rubbish bin was empty on a day to day basic - room vacuum - the kitchen always clean and tidy - free breakfast everyday - the wifi able to get it in my room on level 4 which was great - the only tours i have not done is the wine tours but this time was the wilson tour if they tell you small bag and small camera take their advice not like i did 3 lens and camera body way to heavy to walk up hill but amazing view at the top and to finish it off great swim at the beach - i know where i will be staying next year when i return for the Australian Open 2019 See More

Review for Shanan's free walking tour on Monday's. Great tour taking around 3 and a half hours. Shanan was very knowledgeable and engaging, providing interesting facts and stories over a range of topi...cs and icons in Melbourne. The tour was well delivered and well paced. There was a good range of humour and information provided throughout, well worth spending the time going on the tour if you can! See More

The location is perfect but this easily the worst hostel I've ever stayed in. The free wifi of course was useless. The toilets are..disgusting. The showers have no hooks or shelves so I'm supposed to ...walk around the locker room naked without even my towel? Are we in the Pakistani army here What the hell?! And the shower doors have gaps in them so even if you brought your stuff in with you any old perv can see your genitals while you shower. The dorm room stunk and made me cough a lot by the second night. Also while it's not quite their fault, their clientele was a friggen nightmare, people who scream and have parties all night, come into the room singing karaoke at 4.30am turning on all the lights, and did I mention, stink? My bedding had dark hairs throughout it, and the mattress sunken and leaving me with back pains. What a ruined trip. Edit: the staff were great. See More

Very nice backpacker. I like everything except no windows in my room. It's fully aircon. Good location. Neat and clean. Rooftop access. I only hope rooms to be bigger and some ventilation.

The location is perfect! I can't stress this enough! They also have a storage facility for those with flights late in the afternoon/night. They also have a functioning elevator unlike one of the here said :p They also have lots of freebies like tours and dinner. Emily was funny and warm, and we loved our Fitzroy tour with her (and the food she recommended at Naked for Satan!) However, there are many things that can be improved. Our light was busted for two days and nobody in the reception knew what to do about it. We needed a functioning light as we work at night, and the lobby could be a bit crowded. They fixed it the following day and we were grateful about that. The walls are thin but it's a hostel so that's a given, I guess. Many times it was noisy in the middle of the night so that was the guests and I don't think I could fault the hostel for that. All in all not bad for its price. We would still highly recommend it to our friends! See More

Localisation is perfect, FREE tramway area, train station, supermarket Metro ,post office, Om vegetarian restaurant for 6.5$ refillable, Chinatown wich cheap restaurant, close to any museum. Great fun at... the gaol jail with special visit as prisoners. Best iff: We enjoyed the two walking visit, one with Amelia on Fitzroy and one with Shabon downtown. These 2 walks were our best experience in Melbourne. So great. See More

It was all a great experience. So many good tours and the pub crawl is definitely a highlight. Emily is always very inviting and gets people to socialize and come out of their shells. Thanks to her I ...have had quite a lot of fun I wouldn't have had otherwise. See More

BAD EXPERIENCE, felt as though they took the opportunity to take advantage of me and my friends as we are from Melbourne had an intimidating man from reception come and tell us off for talking in our threatened to kick us out and call the police when I had paid over $100 for the room. Then to check out in the morning they kept my $20 bond for the keys when I returned both keys to reception what a joke!!! See More

I've been to many hostels in my life and this was really one of the worst I've been to.
The rooms, pillow cases and blankets were dirty. The showers were cold (even though there was no other person ha...ving a shower at the same moment) and it smelled of urine in each shower-simply disgusting. Further the WIFI never worked in our room as it was supposed to. We didn't had enough plug sockets ( you didn't had your own on each bed- as normally every hostel has)
Further there was not one Hostel activity at the weekend. The guy at the front desk with the curly hair was as helpful as a stone. He seemed not at all interested in giving some information or advice to foreigners. When you asked him something he seemed annoyed.
They serve breakfast just until 9 am.
Only good thing is the location.

Great location, clean rooms and bathroom, spacious kitchen, dining and lounge area. Rooftop space is a great bonus, great staff. Only downside like any backpackers are other guests, there will be alw...ays other that don't think of anyone else bar themselves. See More

I stayed at greenhouse for 6mo. I have never come across more friendly staff, or comfortable accommodation. I've made life long friends and had great laughs with the staff. In a chaotic situation like... backpacking where everyone and everything is always changing, greenhouse is reliable and welcoming! If in doubt, you'll find no better hostel than the greenhouse. Also, go on a pub crawl with Brendan or Molly, good times are always had! See More

Pls don't stay in a hostel with bad service, ignoring staff & management. This was once in my lifetime experience after travel every year in the past 15 years!
I have not receive any message after the... Manager response in Tripadvisor of my review that mentioned they sent me a private message to follow up!!!

location is good, that's all! Normally stay for only a night, I won't complain, but we stay for 3 nights and for this price, around Melbourne CBD there is a lot of hostels around or apartment from Airbnb paid lesser price for a better deal.

1) dirty & dated hostel (see my photos then you understand how it is looks like)
2) staff attitude problem
- we check-in 15 Apr stay for 3 nights, put down our luggages 11am in room (housekeeping not yet done) & go out sightseeing directly. Night time we back to hotel, sofa & carpet was many many stained, Windows frame & table light cover with a lot of dust. Talk to a man staff who on duties 10pm on the 1st day after we back to hostel, he give me 3 options (1) walk out now & full refund me on the 1st night, help me to call hostel YHA to check room available, but walking distance unable to reach, actually who know who he call? what! 10pm bring my hubby & 4 years old child walk out. (2) change another room with no window. Window in hotel is important when there is a fire incident, and also seems no different on the sofa problem in a room with no windows (3) give me bed sheets, go back to my room & self service cover the disgusting sofa. So I got no choice, only option 3. He said will ask the housekeeper take note of the dusty window but they never do anything till we check-out! A very big rubbish bin (really big) in our room, the rubbish never thrown and clear for the whole 3 days that we stayed!!!!!!!!!!
3) everything was dated. Sofa in shared living room also stained & dated. Old shared shower rooms with spoiled water tab, as I try 3 showers room in my 3 days stay in the hostel, all cool water tabs cannot be turn, only hot water tab can turn. Mean unable to adjust the water temperature that u wish!
4) prepare to carry luggages up to a few steps of stairs in the ground floor lift entrance, then access to 6th floor check-in counter, we have no problem of this! But our room arrange in level 4, lift was very slow!
5) saw the housekeeper never wash the basin when she do the cleaning in the morning, just anyhow wipe it dry to show she had did something for it!
6) breakfast was fine with basic corn flakes, milk, bread, tasteless butter & strawberry jam, but running fast then got to go counter "ask for more foods & drinks", then they pass you 2 big bottles of milks, no staff auto top up.
7) super thin wall, u can hear all people cross by & the conversation next to your room! When u close the door of your room, a big sound easily make due to the wall problem!
