Instead of doing a WOC Wednesday post today, FSU extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Alton Sterling. His completely unjustified murder has left a wife without a husband and five children without a father. To any and all members of our organization, we are here for you and deeply wish that this would not feel so familiar.

Please feel free to reach out to any of our E-board members for support, and follow the ‪#‎AltonSterling‬ hashtag for recent upd...ates about the DOJ investigation. Additionally, Issa Rae Presents has started a scholarship fund for Alton's children, which is linked below.

Rest in Power, Alton Sterling.

WOC Wednesday: Gwendolyn Brooks
Brooks was a highly regarded, much-honored poet, with the distinction of being the first black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. Many of Brooks's works display a political consciousness. She was the author of more than twenty books of poetry and the poetry consultant to the Library of Congress—the first black woman to hold that position.

'Striking Down Abortion Restrictions

Photo cred: https://twitter.com/Reuters/status/747454454992084992'

Yesterday we celebrated a monumental victory for reproductive justice! In a crucial 5-3 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the admitting privileges and ambulatory surgical center requirements of Texas’ restrictive HB2 law. This decision means dozens of Texas abortion clinics can keep their doors open, while people across the US maintain their right to abortion without undue burden.

FSU would like to extend a warm congratulations and a massive thank-you to the activists w...ho joined us at the Supreme Court in March. By donating just an hour or two of your time, you spoke truth to the most powerful Court in the land. You defended bodily autonomy, personal choice, and access to safe abortions for all! FSU is grateful for your engagement and passion in this fight. While the journey for reproductive freedom will undoubtedly continue, we will continue to build unstoppable power on our campus and beyond.

If you’re feeling empowered by this decision and would like to get more involved with FSU’s pro-choice ass-kicking next year, sign up for our listserv here: https://docs.google.com/…/1Ytjnm56Il6QmwnG_P66S-pk…/viewform

For this week’s Spotlight Sunday we look to our very own Erin Frith!

Erin is a recent graduate of George Washington University with a degree in Political Science. During Erin's scholastic career she was president of Association of Queer Women and Allies - AQWA and on the ultimate frisbee team. Erin, identifying as a queer woman, provided a safe space for queer women, once a week, to be educated and supported about genders, various sexual orientations, and the different topics and struggles that come along with it. We wish Erin the best in her post grad endeavors!

Our hearts go out to all those affected by the tragic shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando last night. During a time of year that many parts of the nation so joyfully associate with queer pride, an expression of identity that has been stifled for so much of history, FSU is heartbroken by the homophobia that can drive individuals to commit such horrible acts.

We would also like to acknowledge that while this act of violence was a horrific attack on the queer community, it should not be followed by violence and hatred directed at the Muslim community, a community currently celebrating a peaceful holiday. These tragic acts of violence do not reflect their faith.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of FSU's E-board if you need support.
