Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. and the City of Hammond announce that... the Hammond Police Department is among the first law enforcement agencies in the State of Indiana to join the Neighbors app by Ring (available via iOS/Android here) to provide Hammond residents with real-time neighborhood crime and safety information. The Neighbors network already has millions of users and has been instrumental in keeping neighborhoods safe.
“The Neighbors app and the city’s ongoing partnership with Ring is another effort by my administration to keep Hammond at the forefront of technology to ensure the safety of our residents. This app will provide the police department an additional method of communication within our neighborhoods and will allow our residents to keep their neighbors and our police up to date on what is happening in their part of the city,” said Mayor McDermott.
Residents can download the free Neighbors app, join their neighborhood, and use the app to: monitor neighborhood activity; share videos, photos and text-based posts; and receive real-time safety alerts from their neighbors, local law enforcement and the Ring team.

Hammond Police once again successfully utilize Hammond's "Blue Net" ...license plate reader system to recover a vehicle involved in an armed home invasion and kidnapping from Illinois. This led to the apprehension of an Illinois man considered armed and dangerous, and wanted on felony arrest warrants.
On March 22nd, at approximately 8:00 PM, a Hammond police officer was alerted on his mobile in-car license plate reader system that a vehicle, wanted from Illinois for involvement in an armed home invasion and kidnapping, was entering Hammond and approaching the Horshoe casino. The officer immediately responded to the casino and located the vehicle parked and unoccupied in the parking garage.
Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) officers located the driver of the vehicle inside the casino. Hammond police and IGC officers approached the male and he attempted to flee. He was tackled and apprehended. During the arrest, an IGC officer suffered an injury to his arm.
The male was identified as 26-year-old Giovanni Castrejon from Chicago. Castrejon was wanted on felony parole violation charges stemming from an aggravated assault. Castrejon and the vehicle were taken into custody and held for Riverside, Illinois police.
