During the American Revolutionary War, Hessiansoldiers "mounted a battery on [the hill]," "to command the mouth of the Harlem River." [2]When Fifth Avenue was extended north ofCentral Park as the railroads made Upper Manhattan more accessible, the rocky hill proved a difficult obstacle to clear; it was set aside for public use in 1836 and officially opened in 1840

Today's Actor is Tom Walsh and the Cotton Club. The Cotton Club might be Harlem’s most famous surviving jazz venue, but during the Harlem Renaissance that started after World War I and ended sometime during the Great Depression, it was also the neighborhood’s most notorious. It had been opened by Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion, as the Club Deluxe (or Club De Luxe) in 1920.
