I loved the church and being part of the celebration and memorial service for Janine Ullyette, she was one of my best friends. I was one of the dancers at the memorial. I was disappointed though, I wa...s asked to leave the church 7:57pm, and had to wait outside in the cold for 40 minutes for my Access a Ride...they told me the church was closed. I was disheartened that a beautiful place of worship would kick out a person to stand in the cold. See More

The Church of the Heavenly Rest is an Episcopal church located just next to the National Academy Museum on 5th Avenue. Started in 1895 by Civil War veterans, the church moved to this present location the 1920s.

The nave of the church is neo-gothic in design and features a particularly nice carved altarpiece. The outer appearance of the building is blocky and seemingly unfinished. Seems much of the intended sculpturing of the church facade was halted or cancelled as a result of the 1929 stock market crash and ensuring period of national economic recession at that time.

If you are sightseeing in the area and enjoy church visits, take a peek inside. This is not one of the more attractive churches to visit in the city but its alright and can be be conveniently included in your list of places to visit if you intend to spend time on the Museum Mile seeing museums in the area.

Next to Church of the Intercession where I work, I love Church of the Heavenly Rest. I have the honor to play the Great Organ there for The Marymount School Service of Lessons and Carols, and I am to call their Organist, Mollie Nicholas a colleague and friend. My best description of Heavenly Rest comes from my nephew when he was 3. I took him in to show him where I played the organ. He was wide eyed at the art deco statues. He said; 'Uncle B, this must be the church that Batman goes to" I said, well it does have a Gotham City look. Great music, preaching, people and a tasty cafe... See More

We usually say a hearty "Amen" at the end of a sermon, last Sunday there was thunderous applause. Listen to Lisha Epperson's full sermon from Sunday, March 18 here:…/

Thanks to everyone who came to see Hudson Link's film: Zero Percent this past Friday! If you are interested in getting more involved in Prison and Reentry Outreach Ministry, we are holding mock interviews on Wednesday, April 4. We will practice interviewing participants to build their confidence and interview skills - it's a great way to get involved.

As a part of our ongoing outreach focus during Lent, this Sunday we will be packing more Grace-to-Go meals in the Church.

At 10am we participated in the 17 minute student-led walk out against gun violence. We joined with schools in our neighborhoods and across the country. Our children are now leading us.

Indiscriminate violence is incompatible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we seek to follow. We want a culture that protects our children and honors our sacred places. This culture is more possible with fewer guns.

We will take part in the March for our Lives on Saturday, March 24 here in New York City. You are invited to march with us. Let us know that you want to participate and we will coordinate logistics.

As one of our final Lent outreach activities, we will be packing more Grace-to-Go meals! Join us after the 10:30am service (around noon) on Sunday, March 18 as we pack shelf-stable Grace-to-Go meals for our partner organizations in Harlem and beyond.

Watch the video below for more information about this ministry.

To address episodic hunger, Church of the Heavenly Rest has developed shelf-stable, ready-to-cook, simple-to-prepare, non-perishable meal kits. Our Grace-To-Go boxes give those in need an option when food pantries are not open and other hunger coping strategies have been exhausted. We prepared, pack...

Don't forget that our rescheduled outreach film screening of Zero Percent is THIS Friday, March 16 at 6pm in the Undercroft.

Zero Percent is the story of Sing Sing inmates who created Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, an organization that now provides college education, life skills, and re-entry support to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women. We will host special guest Todd Young, alumni coordinator at Hudson Link, and other Hudson Link program graduates for a Q & A after the film. A light dinner will be served.

Join us tomorrow, Sunday, March 11, after the 10:30 service as we gather to consider how we might elevate our hospitality by elevating our welcome! If you've experienced a warm welcome here at CHR and would like to extend that to others, we hope you'll join the ushers and greeters and all others who are interested in making Heavenly Rest the most welcoming church in the city!
