Why can’t I share or view news content on Facebook?

In response to Canada's Online News Act, news content from Pages connected to a news outlet can no longer be viewed or shared in Canada.

If you are in Canada, this means:

  • You can no longer share or view news links or content on Facebook, including news articles and audio-visual content posted by news outlets.
  • You can no longer see links or content from any news outlet Pages, even if you search for them or follow them.

How we identify news:

  • Meta’s review team identifies news outlets based on legislative definitions.
  • News outlets include organizations whose primary purpose is to produce news content, in any format (including an audio or audiovisual format), that reports on, investigates or explains current issues or events of public interest.

My post, video or reel has been labeled as sharing news content. What can I do?

  • Create a new post, video, or reel without a news link.

My comment has been labeled as sharing news content. What can I do?

  • Repost your comment without a news link.

I am seeing ‘This content isn’t available in Canada’ on my Feed. What does this mean?

  • This content is connected to a news outlet and is not available to people in Canada.

What does this mean for Facebook group admins and moderators in Canada?

  • If you’re a group admin or moderator in Canada, you can no longer view news content in your group. For example, you won't see posts with news links or posts from news outlet Pages in your Pending Posts queue (if you have post approval turned on). However, any admins or moderators outside of Canada can still view news content. If your group doesn’t have any admins or moderators outside of Canada, you can invite someone outside of Canada to become an admin or moderator.
