Commenting Basics
To comment on something:
- Click Comment below the post or in the white box that says Write a comment.
- Type your comment or:
- Click
to comment with a gif.
- Click
to comment with an emoji.
- Click
to attach a photo or video.
- Click
to post a sticker.
- Click
- Press enter or return to publish it.
To create a new paragraph or line break within a comment, hold Shift on your keyboard, and then press Enter (on a PC) or Return (on a Mac).
To mention a person in a post or comment:
- Type the person's name with a capitalized first letter.
- Select a name from the list that appears.
To mention a Page or group in a post or comment:
- Type "@" and then the Page's or group's name.
- Select a name from the list that appears.
Keep in mind that depending on a Page’s settings, you may not be able to mention it.
When you mention a person, Page or group in a post or comment, a link is created. The audience for the link that’s created depends on the privacy settings of the person, Page or group you mention. For example, if you mention a secret group, only that group's members can see the link. The person, Page or group you mention may get a notification, and the post or comment may appear on their timeline.
To delete your comment below a post:
- Hover over the comment and click
.
- Select Delete....
- Click Delete.
To edit your comment below a post:
- Hover over the comment and click
.
- Select Edit....
- Make your changes and then press Enter or Return to save, or Esc to cancel.
Comment Privacy
When you post something on Facebook, you can use the audience selector to choose who can like or comment on it.
If you create a public post, by default everyone can like or comment, even people who aren't following you. However, you can change who can like or comment on your public posts in your follower settings.
By default, everyone can comment on your public posts, even people who don't follow you. To change who can comment on your public posts:
- Click
at the top right corner and select Settings.
- Click Public Posts on the left.
- Go to Who Can Follow Me and make sure Public is selected.
- Click Edit next to Public Posts Comments.
- Select who is allowed to like or comment on your public posts:
- Public: Includes everyone, even people not following you.
- Friends (+ friends of anyone tagged): Includes your friends on Facebook. If anyone else is tagged in a post, then the audience expands to also include the tagged person and their friends.
- Friends of Friends: Includes all of your friends and any friends that they have.
By default, only your friends (and friends of anyone tagged) can like or comment on public profile information. Public profile info includes:
- Profile photos and videos.
- Cover photos.
- Featured photos.
- News Feed updates about changes to your basic info on your profile.
You can adjust who can like or comment on public profile information.
To adjust who can like or comment on your public profile information:
- Click
at the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Click Public Posts on the left.
- Go to Who Can Follow Me and make sure Public is selected.
- Click Edit next to Public Profile Info.
- Select who you'd like to comment on and like your public profile information:
- Public: Includes everyone, even people not following you.
