How does Meta use this information?
  • Your information helps us gain insights for business and product research. For example, we could use the insights to understand what apps are used by males in France in a certain age range, which would help us understand what apps are useful for that demographic and how we can improve our services for that demographic.

Facebook is carrying out a series of surveys to study people’s experiences with and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines, including how the information you encounter on social media may affect these experiences and attitudes.

Insights derived from your survey responses will be analyzed in combination with some of your activity on Facebook and Instagram (as described below) in order to assist us with carrying out this research and improving our products and services. Your personal information will be processed in accordance with the Viewpoints Data Policy, the Viewpoints Terms of Service, the information presented to you in the Program Overview and the information provided to you in this Help Center article.

What points will I receive?

You receive points for each survey you complete (between 200 and 400 points per survey, which will be displayed to you prior to the survey). In total, you will earn 2,000 points for completion of the entire program.

How does Facebook use sensitive information in survey responses?

Some questions in the COVID-19 Vaccine Survey program (“Program”) on Viewpoints will ask you to provide information about your health, religion, race or political ideology. As such, we’ll rely on your explicit consent to collect and review your survey responses. We’ll analyze your survey responses in combination with some of your activity on Facebook and Instagram in order to study how the information people encounter on social media affects their experience with COVID-19 vaccines. To achieve this purpose, we will:

  • Analyze the impact of our products and messaging related to COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Compare levels of exposure to content related to COVID-19 vaccines, other vaccines, or health or wellness available on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Understand how communities, content and behavior on Facebook and Instagram may affect public health attitudes and decisions.
  • Evaluate the quality of our products and messaging and improve or remove them based on these findings.
  • Remove any information that can be used to identify you before sharing anonymous data with external academic researchers.
You can withdraw consent and delete survey data in the Program Overview or Privacy & Data settings in the Viewpoints app at any time.
How does Facebook use data from my Facebook and/or Instagram account for this research?

In order for you to participate in this Program and for us to carry out the research, we need to collect and analyze certain types of information from your Facebook and Instagram accounts together with your survey responses. We need this to help us better understand the impact of products and messaging related to COVID-19 vaccines on Facebook and Instagram, create insights that reflect the greater population, and improve our products.

We do this by using your Facebook family device ID to check for Facebook and Instagram accounts on your phone. Facebook will then use your Viewpoints account details to see if any accounts match. We may also match your Viewpoints account to your Facebook and Instagram accounts if you created a Viewpoints account by logging in with Facebook, or if your Facebook or Instagram accounts were added to the Account Center.

We will collect the following information from your Facebook and Instagram accounts and analyze it together with your survey responses to carry out the research into how the information people encounter on social media affects their experience with COVID-19 vaccines:

  1. Demographic Information: Age, gender and location information associated with your Facebook and/or Instagram account.
  2. Account Creation: The dates you were invited to join Facebook or Instagram, when you created an account and when your account was confirmed.
  3. App and Device Preferences: The device model, operating system, or web browser you use to access Facebook or Instagram, your main device and your preferred language settings.
  4. App Interactions, Content Exposure and Derived Information from your Facebook and Instagram accounts regarding:
  • The number of friends and followers you have.
  • The types and number of pages and people you follow. For example, information regarding whether you follow pages about food or if you follow social media influencers.
  • Groups you’re in.
  • Your exposure to and engagement with content related to COVID-19 and other health related content.
  • Whether or not you have a profile picture.
  • Your interests.
  • Information we derive about you.
  • The dates you accessed Facebook and Instagram and information about your activity levels in each app.
The information that is collected about your Facebook and Instagram app interactions and content exposure is aggregated before being analysed by Facebook to carry out the research.
What happens when I withdraw consent for using my COVID-19 Vaccine Survey responses?

You can withdraw your consent to providing your survey responses at any time via the Program Overview screen or via the Privacy and Data settings in the Viewpoints App. After such withdrawal, If you withdraw consent to allow Viewpoints to use your survey responses, including those with sensitive data, you will leave the Program, your Program data will be deleted and will no longer be analyzed against your data from Facebook and Instagram.

  • We’ll delete your Program data for this Program within 90 days. This information may have already been analyzed for research purposes.
  • You’ll keep any points or rewards that you’ve already earned.
  • If you withdraw your consent, this won’t have any impact on your eligibility to take part in other Viewpoints programs.
Here’s how Facebook uses all survey responses and other data provided in the COVID-19 Vaccine Survey program:
  • Your survey responses are securely stored and access is restricted to a select group of people at Facebook who either work on the Viewpoints platform or are carrying out the research.
  • We’ll retain your Program data in a pseudonymized state for a period of up to 2.5 years from the date that you complete the last survey. These survey responses are being retained to study both long-term and short-term global trends regarding how the information people encounter on social media affects their experiences with COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines. After this time period, your survey responses will be anonymized.
  • Your responses to questions in this Program will not be used to personalize your experience, or to provide or improve ads for you and others on Facebook and Instagram.
  • As part of this research, Facebook will anonymize your Program data before sharing them with external academic researchers. For more information on how Facebook processes your data on Viewpoints please see the Viewpoints Data Policy.
