In Hongkou, they still play kang le qi, an old favorite lane game that’s rarely seen these days (hence the crowd). A slice of old Shanghai, on Zhoushan Road, in the former Jewish ghetto.

This passageway in Heart’s Desire lane, Laoximen, once bustled with residents. Now a one-man operation churns out spring roll wrappers in the empty space, an assembly line of one. One hand shapes the sticky rice flour dough, which sits in a red plastic pail at his feet. The other flips the paper-thin pancake, deftly transferring it to a growing pile, as he simultaneously plops the dough onto the griddle, in an unbroken rhythm. A new function for an old space, as Laoximen morphs again. Come see it with us in August, while we still can. Laoximen - A Last Look Saturday August 3 / Wednesday August 21, 10am RMB 150 members/250 nonmembers RSVP info@historic-shanghai.com
