“I think one of the things I like most is the close relationship between students and teachers. The classes are small, so it’s much easier to tell when students think material is difficult or are having a hard time. Because classes are small, we’re so much closer, and I can teach and help students more. But in big classes - my classes in China were much larger, around 20 people - I was physically further from my students in a bigger room, and it was a bit lonely… To those who want to study Japanese: it’s ok if you make mistakes, just please talk a lot. Sometimes, you might think that your Japanese isn’t very good, so you shouldn’t speak. There are a lot of people like that, but that thinking is bad. You have to talk a lot and make mistakes in order to get better. So for those who come to JaLS: please talk a lot!”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p118x118/13423927_1001308749918481_4369719611087210865_n.jpg?oh=0893f0bac173ac8e7a14f3a9b2fd6c0b&oe=57F830B9)

“The teachers are really nice, and the classes are small, so it’s easy to learn a lot. It’s easy to ask the teacher questions whenever we’re confused, while in a group of thirty, say, that would be much harder… I also really like it in my host family - I think they’re great people, and the food is always great and plentiful. We went to Hokkaido Kaitaku no Mura, which is this historic village in Hokkaido. There were a lot of replicas of old buildings, and insights into the lifestyles of the old people of Hokkaido. It was fun to walk around, though Japanese history is too complex for me. My favorite part about living with a host family is the food, and the casual Japanese I get to practice.”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/s160x160/13450740_1001307673251922_8382833125401662422_n.jpg?oh=d89caba704f8d51ee60f344c95a04242&oe=5808DB35)

“I was a Japanese teacher, and I taught Japanese is many different places to many different students - to students who loved Japan. But these people who loved Japan and studied Japanese came to Japan and did not enjoy everyday life here. So they began to hate Japan, and that made me sad. I wanted students who studied abroad in Japan to love their time here, and that’s the purpose behind JaLS… Our first two students were here for two weeks, but both were so happy. One was from America, the other from Taiwan. When those first two students came, we were so, incredibly happy, because that was the start of JaLS. Those two went to so many different places together and had such an amazing time, and they both came back to JaLS again… I’m a Japanese teacher, but I’m also a student. In this school, there is so much that I’m still learning, and this experience is so rewarding to me. Things like that make me really love JaLS.”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p118x118/13335730_996849263697763_5996598287213783329_n.jpg?oh=f82048dc08e9d860bd5ca79ad085e0e3&oe=57FA2C4A)

“I initially came to JaLS pretty much by accident - I was just looking for something to fill the summer after my first year or college, and I had always wanted to study in Japan, and JaLS was the only place that would take me with no previous experience. After two months, I learned a whole year’s worth of Japanese and was able to skip a year of language studies in college. We also did a bunch of field trips and activities, and this one time I remember going up Moiwa Mountain - this mountain near Sapporo that is supposed to have one of the most beautiful views of the city - but it was so cloudy that we couldn’t see more than a few meters. After such a long ropeway trip, this should have been pretty infuriating, but we wound taking more pictures and just laughing about how absolutely miserable the view was. It’s memories like those that made me miss JaLS and decide to come back this summer as a student and intern.”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p118x118/13319917_993774880671868_5741056517180912297_n.jpg?oh=b3d9922dad2faa98ab864963e492ca13&oe=57C7BD7C)

“I like these people and what they’re doing. They’re always so passionate. I’m actually not very experienced, so sometimes I feel like I’m not skilled enough, but they always teach me and I can really learn from them. They’re super good teachers for me, too… Everyone are super close friends, or like a family. Everyone wants to know if you are worried about something. None of the teachers feel like they “have to” do anything - it’s always because they want to. It’s not just one or two people, either - all of the teachers feel this way.”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p110x80/13335737_993407734041916_8659819044479832645_n.jpg?oh=86b8f5e9fc586211105f945a6ff4338e&oe=57FD63CF)

“My dad actually found the school’s website, not me. I wanted to try doing a study abroad in Japan, and when he found this school, I thought, ‘Oh, it’s just a language school.’ I thought that I wanted to go to a university, so I was looking at Nanzan University, and universities where I would be an exchange student for a year, or something. But then I looked at the application forms for those, and it was just a disaster - you have to do all these things and get all these letters of recommendation and all this other stuff. So I figured I would just go to this Hokkaido school, since it didn’t seem like I would be able to make the others in time. It turned out to be the best turn of events ever, because I really liked it here. I think, from a foreigner’s perspective, everyone wants to go to Tokyo or Kyoto, so at first I didn’t really want to come up here, but I love it up here so much…
“I was only here for six weeks the first time I came out here, but I almost passed out of a full semester of college Japanese. I took the final on the first day - they told me two hours in advance that I would take it, and I was in class at the time - so I just walked in and took the final. If I’d just had, like, thirty minutes to study, if I could have studied just five kanji, I would have passed. I failed by, like, two points. But because of that, every semester since then has been easy.”'](https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p118x118/13344509_993407177375305_4320756678259312967_n.jpg?oh=77fb15050131d3fd30ed855cf6ddb89c&oe=580C8B88)
