Hello new brains and hearts!

If you found us through this TED talk, welcome My name is Jessica, my husband’s name is Edward (yep, that man I was engaged to -- we’re married now!) and we produce the YouTube channel How to ADHD. It’s a fun and educational resource that provides science-based info and helpful strategies for ADHD brains and the hearts who love them.

I started the channel as a way to understand my own brain, but since then it’s grown and helped thousands of ot...hers. The response we’ve gotten has been so overwhelming that we are now committed not only to continuing to create these resources, but to make them forever free and easily accessible so that no one ever has to struggle alone.

It’s a LOT of work, but we’re able to do it mostly because of our tireless volunteers and the support we get through Patreon (patreon.com/howtoadhd). It’s because of our Patreon supporters that we are able to take time off work to create this content and go do this TED talk, and it’s because of our volunteers that the talk and this community is as strong as it is. (THANK YOU!!!!)

Feel free to poke around! I've created a playlist for new brains and hearts to check out what we do here – it's kind of like a How to ADHD starter kit! You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch…

You can also check out our website with all our videos here: howtoadhd.com

Hugs!!

Jessica

Being an adult with ADD has been a struggle from the start. I have always had to work harder and longer than the next person in line. During my grade school years, I attended a Saturday school to help... control and learn how to make my brain function in order to learn. Routine routine routine. This is how I live constantly and very few understand. I am a successful trainer within a very large industry and company. Using all of the skills and knowledge of learning I am able to transfer knowledge to those around me, who pay attention. The struggle is real though. I have to train my leaders to help me grasp what is being said to me. I joking tell them,"make sure you tell me twice," because I never get it the first time. I am ecstatic that I found a source via Facebook that is providing help and guidance for those to help achieve life goals. Kudos to you Jessica. See More

As an adult who didn't discover the problems that affected me until I'd passed the apex of my young adult life, these videos have honestly been a life saver helping me transition into a more positive ...mindset and a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Though it has only been 6 months since my medication and 8 months since my diagnosis, I still have a lot of work to do but knowing there is a community out there and knowing that we have Jessica and her partner to help has made me infinitely more comfortable with myself and how my future will benefit from the lessons learned here.

Thank you again for the videos you make, the lessons you share and for helping build a community of like minded individuals. Between this and the reddit community I'll never be alone again.

Hello, I stumbled across your Ted Talk a few weeks ago and have been obsessed with the content you and your wonderful team are creating. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and brain. I am 44 yea...rs old and was "official" at 43 (1 year ago this month). I am a working professional and always knew I had "something" (special) going on upstairs. Was diagnosed with many things including depression and anxiety, but those never settled well with me. I was lucky and figured out some things to be successful. I have a wife and 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl. My boys are part of our tribe, but my wife and daughter are not which makes family dinners fun!! I would love to talk to you about any opportunities to help others if possible. I am also not in the medical field but love coaching and feel I have some things to share on a positive, self worth level. Take care and keep doing what you do.. PLEASE! See More

I am so thankful to you because you help me better understand myself and maybe connect with people who share the same struggles I'm going through. This really help more than the doctors here ever help...ed me with those difficulties and I wish like you I'll have a medication so I can go on with my life, finish my projects, get a job, etc. You gave me hope it can be easier someday and have a chance at a beautiful life. Thank you again, and never forget that you are making a real difference in this world. Keep it up! ❤️❤️❤️ See More

Someone I know shared your Ted Talk and it blew me away! I no longer feel like a total failure, I now know I just need help! Still don't really know what I want to do or how to do it but I now know I'...m not alone! Still don't know where to get help from (I don't live in the US) but I'm starting with watching your amazing videos in the YouTube recommended order and reading many of the links you've shared. I have a new goal because of you... Understand and be understood! Thank you!!! See More

I am thirty-five and I watched this video just the other day. I remember thinking how can this lady know all about my life? Her life was mine up until high school graduation. My family never accepted ...ADHD as anything more than a reason to drug up a child so I have never been evaluated for it but now I think I will at least ask. Thank you so much for sharing this video. It may save me and a lot of other people years more of additional failure and grief. See More

Been adhd since I was 5 yrs old when my school I was attending had deemed me to be special needs. Thankfully my mom fought for me to be in a normal classroom.

I’m now 34 and I still think my mind re...sembles the movie twister. But like the movie I am chasing the tornado and trying to figure out a way to work with what I can’t control. See More

Can't thank you enough for showing that it's OK to be vulnerable. I feel like a failure all the time, and finding your videos right after finding out there was this biological problem with me was real...ly soothing, just like eating a whole chocolate bar. I don't know who I am if I ever happen to minimize those symptoms, but I'm glad someone felt like sharing in their heart. I mean it: can't thank you enough! See More

Outstanding! These videos have helped me to understand myself better and why I do things the way that I do. I've known for many years that I had it and that it impacted my life. I posted this on one of the YouTube videos but I just wanted to post it here as well to make sure that you see this. I feel that I have to let you know how much of an impact what you do has made on me.... I just wanted to express how grateful I am for your videos. As I am getting older I have realized exactly how much my adult ADHD affects my life EVERY SINGLE DAY! I was diagnosed as a small child and decided by myself at 13 that medications were not going to be the route for me because I just couldn't see myself being dependent on a pill to function my life (though there is no judgement here towards the people that find that medication helps). I still to this day (I'll be 32 on April first btw) have a father that says my ADHD is an excuse just so I can act out, a boss that can't understand how this disorder affects my work, and a wife who struggles to help me keep our happy marriage afloat. I am here to say that it's not all bad however.....you can function in life with this. I have a house, a wonderful wife whom I would be lost without, three wonderful children, and I manage a successful and quite fast paced (and not always easy to manage) gas station. Jessica I have laughed with and cried too your videos. I have related too and found out things about myself that I never knew.....and I'm not even through your first years worth of videos yet. I'm sorry I ramble as do we all (one of those new realizations) what I'm trying to say is thank you!!!! You are an enormous help and relief and please never stop doing what you are doing. See More

I love this! Jessica is obviously passionate about educating us and doing it in an engaging way.
She helped give me the courage to get tested and start treatment as an adult with ADHD.
I’m proud of ...my ADHD now, not ashamed, Jessica helped give me that confidence through education and fun!
I can’t stop watching the videos once I get started! (Slight hyper focus?)

I am thankful for you giving a voice to ADHD. Your TEDTalk was so touching bringing me to tears as I see my daughter experiencing the similar struggles but most importantly you spoke a message of HOPE.... My daughter is beautiful, kind, creative, witty and a free spirit. I want her to see what I already know please share any connections or resources you may have on the East Coast or if you are doing any talks here near NJ. Blessings to you as you spread your message! Hello brains! We'll be posting a regular episode later today or tomorrow but in the meantime (totally unrelated, I'm sure!) I think I just had my first panic attack. I wanted to talk about it before I forgot what it felt like, so I just shot this on my cameraphone. This is raw/unedited/no makeup, but hey -- life isn't always polished.

It's free to attend or you can purchase an all access pass to own the series (and our show would get part of that support!)

Controversy sells, and the media knows it. So a lot of what we see, read about, and hear about ADHD and ADHD treatment either misrepresents the facts or is flat-out meant to scare us.

Netflix's new documentary "Take Your Pills" (interview w/producers: https://youtu.be/L-cq_HKdQwc) is no exception. Despite bringing up many legitimate concerns, the film contributes to the confusion, stigma and fear around stimulant medication — many of the experts included either don’t have a... background in research, directly benefit from spreading fear & misinformation about ADHD treatment, or speak on subjects outside their area of expertise.

This is a problem, because — as this study found (https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/cap.2012.0087) — “Inaccurate and sensationalized media reports surrounding ADHD and its treatments [have] a major impact on parental decision making” when it comes to treatment.

Fortunately, a TON of research has been done on stimulant medications, so you and your doctor can decide what’s right for you or your child based on facts, not fear.
