《昆蟲誌》末了,作者Hugh Raffles描述「殺蟲是痛苦的,但也有其意義。呼應著柯妮莉雅.赫塞-何內格曾說過的話,養老孟司也對我們說,他擁有的昆蟲已經夠多了。他不再殺蟲了。奧本大三郎則是說他不曾殺蟲,只會採集活生生的蟲,等到牠們自然死亡後,再製作成標本。」
Hugh Raffles又書寫某歷史片段:
「根據小西正泰...的描述,在剛剛成立的東京大學裡(一八七七年成立),「甲蟲熱」與「蝴蝶熱」於生物學學生之間延燒開來。東京上野動物園的創辦人兼知名學者田中芳男則是出版了史無前例的《採蟲指南》(一八八三年)一書,是一本教人採蟲、保存標本與繁殖昆蟲的手冊(資料主要來自於西方)。同時,橫濱市也開了三家店,專門把來自沖繩島與台灣的蝴蝶賣給水手與其他外國訪客。」
時至今日,昆蟲標本仍深具魔力,讓人驚艷。
