First of all this place is not for ordinary people, you can enjoy living here only after earning a Ph.D. Secondly, I always respected the way British people tho...ught. They had made many marvellous buildings in India. IIAS is an epitome of architecture. Henry Irwin was the architect. When you visit this place, you'll get a feel of royalty. You can feel and imagine, what was the lifestyle of Viceroys. Architecture of building, design, space, outside lawn and garden, woodwork inside the building, everything is superb. Lastly, only three rooms are shown during the tour of building, would be better if we get a chance to see more. For most people now a days, it's a perfect place for taking selfies and photographs, very few sincerely want to understand and know Indian history and it's importance on our current situation of country. I'm saying this because I met and talked with people who were there. For me, very beautiful in terms of looks, marvellous in terms of architecture, peaceful in terms of location and awesome in terms of weather. See More

A residential centre for higher education, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), is located on Observatory hill – one of the seven hills of Shimla. For...med in 1964, this institute was formally inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan – the former President of India on 20th October 1965.

The history of this learning centre is more than 100 years old. IIAS was originally built as home for Lord Duffein, who was the Viceroy of India during the years 1884 and 1888.

It was known as the Visceregal Lodge at that time. Many historic decisions, including the Shimla Conference of 1945 and the Separation of Pakistan and East Pakistan in 1947, have been taken in this building.

Post-independence, the edifice was renamed as 'Rashtrapati Nivas' and was used by the President of India as a summer retreat. It was later converted into a research centre for Indian culture, religion, humanities and social and natural sciences. The architectural beauty of the building is quaint and captivating.

Henry Irwin, an architect in Public Works Department, designed the building. The use of grey stone and exotic Burmese teak gives this heritage building an exquisite look that mesmerises onlookers at the very first glance. A beautiful garden and well-stocked museum are also located within the campus.

Visit to the IIAS has been on my agenda for a very long time. Its a majestic building, and though it looks a little unkempt, and aged, and a little hard to acce...ss through steep winding roads, this beautiful Tudor nestled in the Shimla hills is inspiring on so many counts. Its majestic architecture, beautiful viewpoints, impressive library are some. Also, it occupies a distinguished part of Indian history from the colonial times - I did not know that the heritage building was the site of Independence struggle histories including events like the famous Shimla Conference between the British and the Indian Congress leaders like Nehru . Though not fully successful, that conference set the stage for later negotiations in Delhi which led to Partition of India and then Independence. The huge halls inside, the picture archives, the masterly woodwork, fireplaces and teak furniture from when this was a British Viceroyal Lodge reminded me of the lifestyle of the colonial officials in India's Victorian history. Though much of the palace was out of bounds and dedicated to the use vy visitors ng scholars, the library looked really well-maintained and up to date. I believe it has a formidable collection. Its place within Indian institutions as a top-tied social science research institute seems well-deserved from the topics of several volumes of IIAS publications in the book store on campus. I'm so glad I visited. See More
