Welcome to the second edition of Throwback Thursdays!
I wrote this track with my dear friend Sean aka Mutt, who I met in first year University back in Toronto. He produces funky beat diggery type stuff and is a very funny character. He did...n't produce music before I met him, but then hustled hard and was signed to Goldie's Metalheadz label within a couple years. I was very impressed and we decided to do a tune together.
Sean came over with some cool samples he had lifted out of the graffiti documentary 'Style Wars' and we went from there. The tune came out really funky. I programmed all of these guitars and this jazzy arpeggiated Rhodes part but we needed a solo. Stephane Vera (who you may remember from Throwback Thursdays last week) is always down to throw down a jazzy keyboard solo so we just asked him to come over and do it real quick as he was in the neighborhood.
Colours ended up being Track 1 on Autopirate at Dov's (Muti Music) request. I had initially thought it too mellow to dedicate so much attention to, but it turned out Dov was right. It ended up being a hit with girls and more mature fans and helped to show that ill.GATES wasn't just about Glitchy Hiphop and IDM (which was a common misconception at the time).
